March is National Kidney Awareness Month 💚

The Black History Committee of Orange County encourages our community to take time this month to learn about kidney health and why it matters-especially in the Black Community.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, African Americans are nearly four times more likely to develop kidney failure compared to White Americans. High blood pressure and diabetes- two conditions that disproportionately impact our community- are leading causes of kidney disease.

Kidney disease often has little to no symptoms in its early stages, which is why awareness, regular checkups, and knowing your numbers (blood pressure, blood sugar, and kidney function) are so important.

Here are a few ways you can take action this month:

✅Schedule a health screening
✅Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet
✅Manage blood pressure and diabetes
✅Talk to your family about your health history
✅Learn more through trusted resources like the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases

Let’s honor our history by protecting our future. Healthy communities build lasting legacies.

Waters first entered the entertainment business in the 1920’s as a blues singer and then became a Broadway star. Gordon Parks (1912-2006)
Parks was the first African American photographer on the staff of Life Magazine, and later helped found Essence. He also was the first Black writer and director of a studio film, and his second movie, Shaft, helping to shape the blaxploitation era in the 70’s. Parks famously told Life in 1999: “I saw that the camera could be a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs. I knew at that point I had to have a camera.”
