Last Friday, October 10th, we held the "Amigos de las tortugas" workshop in Orlando, for young people from Moses & Mary Christian Academy. This workshop was part of the Orange County District 3 Youth Innovation Program, led by Christ the King Episcopal Church and the Renacer Foundation. During the activity, the young people learned in a fun and practical way about the importance of sea turtles, including their characteristics, types, habits, reproduction, and how we can contribute to their conservation.

The "Amigos de las tortugas" workshop is a program developed through a partnership between Inwater Research Group and Biophilia Institute. To date, it has reached more than 195 people through eight educational workshops in Central Florida. It will continue to be held to increase the number of ocean guardians in these areas of the state.

On October 7th in Orlando FL., we continued raising awareness among young people in Orange and Osceola counties as part of the "Creating a Sustainable Planet" educational program and competition, led by Mi Familia en Acción Florida, with support from the VoLo Foundation, where we act as partners in environmental education.

At least 22 young people from an Orange County high school learned about the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as the method for developing clean energy projects and the rules of the competition. This activity concludes the first phase of the program, in which more than 110 young people from both counties participated. They will now develop sustainable projects to benefit their school or community.

If you or your child are high school students and are interested in building a sustainable community, form a team of four and you will receive a scholarship if you win first, second, or third place. Call 321-400-5775. Leave a message with your name, phone number, and email address.

In “cayapa” through the Engelwood Neighborhood Center garden.

On Saturday, September 20, 2025, we held a volunteer day at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center community garden in Orlando, FL. At least 28 people participated, including volunteers from Publix, technicians from the City of Orlando's Office of Sustainability and Resilience, and representatives from the Biophilia Institute. During the activity, we weeded all areas, prepared the 13 raised beds, and incorporated composted organic fertilizer to improve their fertility.

Then, we planted climate-adapted vegetables and native pollinator species, selected for their compatibility with the local ecosystem, to attract pollinator species and increase biological diversity in the garden. This day allowed us to promote collective learning about urban biodiversity, ecological resilience, and food security in the community. Furthermore, it was a valuable opportunity to integrate efforts between the private sector, public institutions, and environmental organizations around ecological restoration and sustainable development.

The term "cayapa" comes from an ancestral practice referring to cooperative and voluntary work, where the community comes together to perform a task or meet a collective or individual need, such as harvesting or maintenance work, based on reciprocity and solidarity, where the value lies in collective effort.

“Knowledge trail in Birding Park: Towards collaborative conservation”.
On September 13, 2025, we held an interpretive nature walk at Apopka Birding Park in Apopka, Florida. As part of , we gathered as a community and honored our stories, integrating local and scientific knowledge for conservation in an "Ecopedagogy on the Trail" activity.

The event featured Hispanic families, youth, and leaders, who shared knowledge and experiences about ecosystem conservation, their cultures, and their connection to nature. It was also an opportunity to gather in the forest and discuss oak tree transplants while removing invasive plants.

The activity was led by specialists from the Orange Audubon Society and coordinated by the Biophilia Institute, Orange Audubon Society , Hispanic Access Foundation , Renacer Foundation , , , and Latino Conservation Week

On September 4, 2025, we participated in the OUC Emerging Technologies & Sustainability Tour, an event organized by the OUC Public Relations team in Orlando, Florida. During the tour, we learned about the solar energy projects and plans in Orlando, explored the building's operations, and saw the various solar energy prototypes they are developing.

We learned about the Gardenia Floating Solar Array, a 31.5 kW pilot project that allows OUC to evaluate the potential of floating solar energy within its clean energy portfolio. We also saw the solar panels on the parking lot and building roof, as well as the vegetable garden and hydroponic flower gardens. Thank you to Derek D. Hudson and Jeannette from OUC for the invitation.
