Central Florida Urban League

Central Florida Urban League Today, more than 40,000 residents have benefited from our various empowerment programs.

The Central Florida Urban League improves the social and economic conditions of disadvantaged individuals and families in Central Florida through education, employment, and entrepreneurship. The Central Florida Urban League (formerly known as the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League) was founded on August 5, 1977 and chartered as a national organization on May 28, 1978. An affiliate of the National U

rban League, our chapter was created by respected community leaders who believed that Orlando’s African-American community would benefit from professional, economic, and social support. The National Urban League was founded in the early 20th century to assist African-Americans in the Northeast who had fled the segregationist South, only to discover that racial discrimination has no geographic boundaries. Its first agency opened in 1910 in New York City and is headquartered there today, leading the efforts of its local affiliates through the development of programs, public policy research, and advocacy. Today, there are more than 100 local affiliates in 36 states and the District of Columbia, directly impacting the lives of more than 2 million people nationwide.

While Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Americans learned they were free; in celebration of this anniversary, we must recognize the resilience and courage of those who endured slavery which led to that moment. Today, we celebrate all the heroes who fought tirelessly for freedom, justice, and equality.

In Central Florida, we are privileged to live in a region shaped by generations of Black leaders. From entrepreneurs and educators to athletes, faith leaders, and community advocates, generations of Black Central Floridians have helped shape our region.

One such hero was Harry T. Moore, whose courage and commitment to justice helped expand opportunity for generations to come. Along with his wife, Moore dedicated his life to advancing voting rights, educational equity, and economic opportunity for Black Floridians decades before the modern Civil Rights Movement gained national attention. As a leader of the NAACP, he organized voter registration drives throughout the state and advocated for equal pay for Black teachers. Tragically, in 1951, he and his wife, Harriette, were killed by a bomb that was planted beneath their home in Mims. Their legacies, and those of many others, continue to inspire the work we do every day at the Central Florida Urban League.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a call to action. As we gather on this national holiday, let us honor those who came before us by continuing the work of empowering future generations. Together, we can build a Central Florida where opportunity is not limited by circumstance and where every individual has the chance to thrive.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy; a night that forever changed our community. I ask everyone to take a moment to remember the 49 innocent people who lost their lives.

Their memories continue to inspire our commitment to love, inclusion, equality, and justice.

At the Central Florida Urban League, we reaffirm that hate has no place in our community, and that our strength lies in standing together as one.

In between the good food and laughs with friends and family today, please take a moment to recognize the true meaning behind : an opportunity to remember all who died in service to this nation.

At the CFUL, we would like to shine a light on all the Black soldiers who fought for our collective freedom even when they were often denied their own. Black soldiers served with honor, even as their government refused to grant them full civil rights. They sacrificed greatly even as they faced racial injustice at home; their fight was not only on the battlefield but for dignity, recognition, and the promise of freedom.

Today, let's honor their legacy. Black Americans have fought in every major war in this country and deserve the highest level of respect, dignity, and honor.
