This is Bubba who came into our Orange County shelter in such desperate shape, he was placed on the "urgent medical request euthanasia list." LUCKILY, he was taken in by Furever Bully Love Rescue who said they "just appreciate how stinking cute he is."

An unneutered stray with "severe ulcerated wounds on his right front leg," Bubba was also "emaciated, dehydrated" plus had "dental disease." He had to be hospitalized for 3 weeks receiving medical care that included skin grafts. Furever stated that while he had "many medical issues ... the most urgent was the lacerations on his front leg that exposed the tissue and muscle." They stated that once he's "medically cleared he will undergo his heart-worm treatment."

Especially during the summer months our shelter sees higher intake numbers. Yet our Rescues do not see increased fundraising success which is needed to keep pace with these overwhelming numbers of pets in trouble, many with desperate needs like Bubba.

If you want to help Furever and our other Rescues plus our Shelter, consider Fostering or Donating. OR ADOPT! We are happy to report that Bubba has been adopted!

Dog & Cat is so grateful to our donors without whom we wouldn't have been able to send $2,000 to Furever Bully Love Rescue to assist with Bubba's medical needs.

This is what our Rescues often do - take in the cats and dogs in need of medical care and recovery. And it often costs more money than they can fundraise.

Armory was one of the lucky ones! Purrrfect Angels Cat Rescue And Sanctuary was willing to take him in with a large infected wound that was so severe it made his situation desperate. They described him as "defeated". But, they didn't give up on him. They called his recovery "miraculous." They credit the excellent Veterinary care he received saying "the work they did to bring Armory back to health has moved us to tears." (We'll spare you the photo of his wound.)

While Dog & Cat was able to send $2,000 to Purrrfect, it didn't cover all the expenses for Armory or the costs needed for other cats in need. If you can't foster. If you can't adopt. Then DONATE. Check out Purrrfect! Check out Dog & Cat!

Raphy, formerly known as Temo, was pulled from OCAS by Touch of Grey Rescue at the end of last year.

Touch of Grey recognizes there is but a “25% chance” for dogs 7 years & older “of getting adopted from a shelter”. They have found that many of these dogs had “loving families for several years and are now scared, sad, and confused” while “others have had a lifetime of abuse or neglect”. That’s why this Rescue focuses on taking in as many “senior and special needs dogs” from the shelter as they can. They believe “there is still plenty of life left after 7!”.

Raphy’s story, thanks to Touch of Grey, has a happy ending. At 9 years old, Raphy had a successful hip surgery and regained his strength and mobility. And Touch of Grey “received great news: his foster decided to adopt him!”

We are so glad Dog & Cat Foundation had the funds to send to Touch of Grey to help with Raphy’s medical needs!

Celebrating our RESCUES! Do you wonder the impact those who rescue homeless pets from our Orange County shelter have on our community?

Look no further than the numbers. In January of this year, 49 dogs were rescued compared to 32 in January of 2024. The number of cats rescued was the same for January 2024 & January 2025 - 43.

The more support the Rescues have, the bigger their impact! Want to help a registered Rescue partner? Foster! Donate! And Check Out who they are: https://www.orangecountyanimalservicesfl.net/ProgramsServices/Rescues/RescuePartners.aspx

Late last year, we sent $2,000 to help Charlie’s Corner Animal Sanctuary with a Mother Dog and her 3 puppies. The Mother Dog, named Sundae, had been abandoned in an apartment and gave birth to “3 beautiful boys” without any humans around. Sundae and the puppies ended up at Orange County Animal Services and then, shortly after, were pulled by Charlie’s Corner. Soon after that, Sundae became ill and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. She also started showing signs of rejecting her puppies. Charlie’s Corner not only took on the medical needs of the abandoned, sick and unspayed Sundae; but also, the care and feeding of her 3 puppies.

Thank goodness for Charlie’s Corner! Sundae recovered and Charlie’s Corner reports that she is “definitely enjoying being child free. She is very energetic and loves running around our backyard”. The puppies are all adopted but Charlie's Corner says that Sundae is still waiting for her forever home. They say she is "energetic, and full of love" and they "recently discovered Sundae likes to swim!"

We hope Sundae finds her forever home soon. And we hope everyone speaks up about how important it is to spay and neuter our pets!

Check out Sundae @ Charlie's Corner Animal Sanctuary

It doesn’t happen often, but a few times a year, the grant money we send to a Rescue ends up, sadly, helping a Rescue so they can help a dog or cat pass away peacefully. That is the story of Midnight. Midnight was just 3 years old when he was “dumped at the shelter by his owner because they ‘didn’t have time for him’”. He was in terrible shape including suffering from a “severely inflamed” bladder. Despite the care, love and rescue efforts by United Paws Rescue and a dedicated Veterinary Team, Midnight succumbed to his medical conditions having been neglected for too long. United Paws was “angry and devastated” knowing that had Midnight “gotten help sooner, he would still be with us cuddling and purring like the sweet boy he was”.

At Dog & Cat, part of our mission includes educating people about what Responsible Pet Ownership is. We think it starts with asking youself if you are ready for and capable of the lifetime commitment of caring for a dog or a cat. Life Happens, though, so if you ever find yourself suddenly in the position where you can't care for your dog or cat, don't wait! If Midnight's owner had reached out for help sooner, Midnight might still be here enjoying life as a healthy young cat.

It’s the happy holiday ❄️ season, but sometimes it can mean extra stress 😟 in our lives.

If that stress includes trying to keep your pet or trying to responsibly rehome your pet, we recommend you read over Orange County Animal Services's Rehoming Resources page.

It includes pet training assistance, pet food pantries, pet-friendly apartment housing, rehoming social media pages, and a list of local Volunteer Rescues plus how to get in touch with Pet Alliance's limited admission shelter.

We hope it helps you keep your pet in your home or in a foster home, and out of the stress they might feel from suddenly being in the shelter.

Wishing you & yours a good holiday season.🐕🐈‍⬛

As the county's only open admission shelter, Orange County Animal Services does not turn away any pet in need. The shelter should be the last resort for people looking to rehome their pet, not the first.
