I think today is one of the most unifying days in our remembrance of the work accomplished through the cross. It is a day that is in between, the in-between, of the in-between. All the people of history from Adam, Abraham, and Moses, to the prophets, the people and nation of Israel, the disciples, followers, to new believers in Jesus Christ can all come together under the one breath we hold as we… wait.
The longing, anticipation, the hope for what is to come: a king, a savior, and a second coming. It was true then; it is true now. God, Yahweh, redeemed a people and delivered a king to a nation. He sent his perfect, and holy son for all, and He will come again. We can all in our imperfect, rebellious, sinful ways wait in the already, but not yet.
Today always serves as a reminder for my heart that this tension we experience, and the waiting we endure is a testament to the infinite grace and goodness of a God who just wants a relationship with his people. The waiting is the preparing. In the preparation, we can look back into the stories of our past, sit in our present, and hope for our future all working towards the culmination of “You will be my people, and I will be your God.”
I challenge you to lean into waiting today, don’t overlook the tensious beauty of waiting.
Here are three scriptures that bind us together in waiting for what is to come all given to a particular people at a particular time for a particular purpose. May these encourage you to know that you are not alone, but rather a part of a rich historical faith community.
