A small real-world study is adding evidence about a long-acting HIV treatment combination for people with limited options. POZ reports that all 46 participants receiving lenacapavir plus cabotegravir maintained or achieved an undetectable viral load during a median follow-up of nearly two years. The combination is not approved as an HIV treatment, the study had no comparison group and two clinical trials are planned. This early evidence should not be used to change treatment without a qualified HIV clinician.

The new approach replaces rilpivirine with lenacapavir, a long-acting drug that attacks HIV in a different way.

A national study highlights major gaps in protection against hepatitis A and B. POZ reports that researchers analyzed 2017-2023 survey data from more than 13,000 adults and found antibody evidence of hepatitis A immunity in about 40% and hepatitis B immunity in about 27%. The study included higher-risk groups such as pregnant people and people with chronic liver disease, diabetes, kidney disease or immune suppression, but blood-test results cannot show every detail of vaccination history or future risk. Vaccination recommendations depend on age, health and exposure factors, so people should discuss their own needs with a qualified health care professional.

National PrEP Day is an opportunity to talk about both the effectiveness of HIV prevention and the access gaps that keep many people from benefiting. POZ reviews four FDA-approved PrEP options and reports that disparities remain especially pronounced for Black and Latino communities and people in the South. The article also shares advocates' call for sustained public investment in a national PrEP program. PrEP does not prevent other s*xually transmitted infections, and decisions about a particular option belong in a conversation with a qualified health care professional.

CAN Community Health is bringing HIV and s*xual health professionals together in Tampa for its first A Patient's Journey summit. Watermark Out News reports that the free October 13 gathering will cover HIV care and research, prevention before and after testing, clinic operations and inclusive PrEP services. The event is designed for clinical staff, prevention teams, outreach workers, medical students, specialists and advocates, and continuing-education credit is available. Registration was open when the October 6 report was verified.

Grindr has announced an agreement to acquire PurposeMed, the parent company of PrEP telehealth provider Freddie. The Advocate reports that the deal is valued at $250 million, with up to $70 million more tied to performance targets, and is expected to close by the end of the fiscal year. Grindr says the acquisition will help connect more LGBTQ+ people with HIV prevention resources, including PrEP, but those access benefits are the company's stated plan and not yet a measured outcome. This is a business and health-access development, not clinical guidance or individualized advice about PrEP.

The tech company has expanded into LGBTQ+ healthcare.

Researchers are learning more about why broadly neutralizing antibodies may help some people control HIV during closely monitored treatment interruptions. POZ summarizes RIO trial findings in which participants with their own neutralizing antibody responses tended to remain off antiretroviral therapy longer, while the intact viral reservoir appeared to decline faster after experimental antibody treatment. The study offers clues for future antibody and vaccine strategies, but not everyone responded and the approach is not an HIV cure or a reason to stop prescribed treatment. Treatment interruptions in this research were medically supervised and should never be attempted outside qualified clinical care.

Lillian was told in 1989 that she had only two years to live. A new international commission is urging health systems to plan for the growing number of people aging with HIV. POZ reports that researchers, clinicians and people living with HIV called for care that integrates prevention, mental health, social support and management of age-related conditions instead of focusing only on viral suppression. The commission projected that nearly half of people living with HIV could be older than 50 by 2040. These are population-level recommendations, and individual care plans should be developed with qualified health professionals.
