A major milestone for doula care has taken place in Brazil.
A new federal law officially recognizes and regulates the doula profession, establishing national standards for training, hospital access, and integration into public health care.
The law affirms that doulas provide physical, emotional, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, while also guaranteeing their access to both public and private maternity settings.
Importantly, Brazil is also investing in doula training through its public health system, recognizing that supportive, respectful care can play an important role in improving maternal health outcomes.
This is more than a policy update.
It is a reminder that the role of doulas is increasingly being recognized as part of a broader conversation about dignity, access, and person-centered care.
Around the world, doula care looks different in every community. But the need for compassionate support remains universal.
