Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County An integrated network of professionals that includes campus-based faculty, regionally deployed specialists and county-based educators and professionals.

The United States Congress passed legislation in 1862 which provided for the sale of government-owned land to universities with a charge of broad-based education and public benefit. Extension systems were established to “extend” the resources of those universities to a wide range of citizens. As New York’s land-grant institution, Cornell has the privilege and responsibility of addressing state and

national needs through teaching, research and extension. Cornell’s land-grant mission is primarily, though not exclusively, realized through the work of the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Human Ecology, Industrial and Labor Relations and Veterinary Medicine. Cornell Cooperative Extension connects the research-based knowledge of Cornell to individuals, families, businesses and communities. Some 170 Cornell-employed faculty and academic staff work collaboratively with 500 locally-employed professional extension educators aiming to enhance economic well-being and quality of life all over the state. Within this broad-based educational system, Cornell Cooperative Extension creates ongoing, real-time linkages between the research and resources of New York’s land-grant institution.

CCE Oneida Master Gardener Volunteers soiled their un**es - for a good reason! They are taking on the Soil Your Un**es Challenge from USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to test the microbial activity in the gardens soil. The two pairs of cotton un**es will be dug up in late summer/early fall and we will be able to see how active our soil is. Want to soil your un**es with us? Learn more about the challenge at https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/state-offices/montana/soil-your-un**es-challenge.

A big thank you to Central New York Community Foundation for their generous support of CCE Oneida’s Farm to Preschool Produce Box Program! Families at Salvation Army Child Care Center received free produce boxes from our local partner, Reeves Farms. In celebration of strawberry season, families sampled Strawberry S'mores (https://snapedny.org/videos/strawberry-smores/) and learned how to make them at home using ingredients from their produce boxes. We are grateful for CNYCF's support in helping connect families with fresh, local foods.

On behalf of CCE Oneida’s Farm to Preschool program, we wanted to thank Coast of Maine and Ace Hardware of Rome for your generous soil donation! Their support helped us establish elevated planters at our participating child care centers. The children recently had the opportunity to help plant vegetables and learn about how food grows through hands-on gardening experiences. Thank you for helping us create meaningful opportunities for young children to connect with gardening, local food, and healthy eating. We truly appreciate your support and partnership!
