Salads4Schools

Salads4Schools We are a project of the Earth Island Institute (501c-3) working with sanitary districts to use their buffer lands to grow Salads for Schools and the Food Bank.

Salads4Schools TM is a non-profit foundation working with sanitary districts to deploy unused buffer land and discharged recycled agricultural grade water (often high in organic nitrogen) to grow salads for schools. Sanitary and sanitation districts throw away millions of gallons of recycled water every day that could be used for agriculture. These districts have hundreds of acres of buffer land.

We are trying to convince them to let us grow organic produce for schools and the food bank. We would grow the most perishable produce like lettuce and kale and red peppers, because these don't transport well and need to be grown locally. These are the most difficult vegetables for the Food Bank to get and schools have trouble paying for these. These urban farms are also educational and will include job training in fields related to agriculture including soils science, permaculture, etc.
