WHAT IS A HERS RATING?
A HERS rating is like a miles-per-gallon rating for your home. It measures how efficiently a home uses energy, taking things like insulation, windows, HVAC, air leakage, water heating, and appliances into account.
The lower the HERS score, the better!
A lower score means the home is designed to use less energy, which can mean lower utility bills, improved comfort, and better overall performance.

Think of it as a report card for your home's energy efficiency.

A blower door is a calibrated fan temporarily installed in an exterior doorway to measure a home's airtightness. By creating a controlled pressure difference between the inside and outside of the home, the equipment allows trained professionals to accurately measure the amount of air leakage through the building enclosure.

The results of a blower door test are used for HERS® Ratings, ENERGY STAR® homes, energy code compliance, utility programs, and other high-performance building initiatives. Beyond compliance, blower door testing helps builders identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, indoor air quality, moisture control, and the long-term durability of the home.

Because blower door testing directly affects the accuracy of a HERS Rating, the test must be performed by a certified HERS Rater using standardized procedures.

Tuesday Tip: Beat the Heat Without Breaking the Bank
Summer temperatures can send your energy bills soaring—but a few simple habits can make a big difference!

1. Set your thermostat to 76°F when you're home and a little higher when you're away. This means your HVAC system runs less - saving energy, lowering utility bills, and reducing wear on your system. Pair it with a ceiling fan for comfort and even greater savings!
2. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to block unwanted heat from coming into your home.
3. Use ceiling fans to help you feel cooler - just remember to turn them off when you leave the room. A ceiling fan doesn't lower the room's temperature—it only cools the people in it. Leaving it on in an empty room wastes electricity.
4. Check your home's air sealing and insulation—keeping cool air inside means your A/C doesn't have to work as hard.

A more energy-efficient home means greater comfort, lower utility bills, and less strain on the power grid all summer long.
