This Memorial Day, Oreland Troop 1 remembers the Scouts from our troop who gave their lives in service to our country.

The Memorial Chapel at Hawk Mountain Camp stands in their honor — a quiet reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today came at a profound cost. Among those remembered on the plaque hanging beneath the chapel archway is Chief Warrant Officer Robert Oren Hill, Jr.

Known as “Bobby,” Robert Hill was a member of Oreland Troop 1 from 1959 through 1963, where he earned the rank of Star Scout. After graduating from Council Rock High School and working for Bell Telephone, he enlisted in the United States Army and became a helicopter pilot assigned to DUSTOFF medical evacuation units during the Vietnam War. These crews flew into some of the war’s most dangerous conditions to rescue wounded soldiers and civilians.

On September 27, 1970, while responding to the crash of another medevac helicopter during severe weather conditions in Vietnam, Robert Hill’s aircraft also went down. He was killed in the line of duty at just 22 years old.

For his courage and service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with sixteen oak leaf clusters. His name is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and his legacy continues to be remembered at Hawk Mountain Camp and within Oreland Troop 1.

Today, we pause to remember Robert Hill and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. May we never forget them.

Last weekend at Hawk Mountain Camp, a dedicated group of about 15 men came together for a Work Weekend—organized and led by the Hawk Mountain Camp Trust.

A tremendous amount was accomplished in just a weekend: removing dead and fallen trees, improving the fishing pond, tackling drainage issues, clearing invasive species, rebuilding trail bridges, mowing, and more. These projects ensure the camp stays safe, functional, and ready for the next generation of Scouts.

A highlight of the weekend was Mr. Farrell leading the construction of a new fireplace altar at Copperhead Corner—an incredible addition that will be part of future campfires and troop traditions for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time, effort, and expertise to keep Hawk Mountain Camp strong.

Celebrating 109 years of Scouting at Oreland Troop 1.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, we came together to recognize our Scouts, reflect on the past year, and enjoy a great evening of fellowship and a home-cooked meal.

This annual banquet has been a tradition for well over a century—connecting today’s Scouts with generations who came before them. Our history and tradition are a big part of who we are. Each year, we bring that history to life with photo boards featuring images dating back to 1917, handwritten logbooks from the 1960s–1980s detailing trips and activities, and treasured memorabilia—including longtime Scoutmaster Hank Jones’ red beret, campaign hat, and Scout jacket. We even display instruments from our old marching band and more—each piece telling part of the story of our troop.

Here’s a look back at some history: coverage from the Ambler Gazette on our 10th Anniversary Banquet.

Celebrating 109 years of Scouting at Oreland Troop 1.

This past Saturday, Scouts, families, and leaders came together for our 109th Annual Banquet—an evening filled with recognition, reflection, and great fellowship. From honoring achievements to sharing a home-cooked meal, it was a reminder of what makes this troop special.

We were especially honored to be joined by Nate Griffin—former U.S. Army sergeant and medic, fitness coach, author of Soldier On!: Forging Ahead Despite the Odds, and dynamic speaker—who shared his story of resilience, leadership, and pushing forward despite the odds. His message left a lasting impression on our Scouts and families alike.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the night such a success—and to all who continue to carry forward the legacy of Oreland Troop 1.

In 1925, Oreland Troop 1 was ahead of its time—taking to the airwaves with a radio show on WFI, one of Philadelphia’s earliest broadcast stations, operated by the legendary department store Strawbridge & Clothier. At a time when radio itself was still a brand-new medium, our Scouts were part of a pioneering moment in communication—sharing their voices with the community in a way that must have felt nothing short of revolutionary.

WFI would later become WFIL (560 AM), a station that went on to play a major role in broadcasting history. WFIL became widely known as one of the most influential Top 40 radio stations in the country during the 1960s, helping define the sound of a generation. It was also home to early broadcasts of American Bandstand with Dick Clark, before the show moved to national television and became a cultural phenomenon.

Edward H. Breisacher was Oreland Troop 1’s Scoutmaster from 1919 to 1928.
