Some Additional Information Regarding Suspension of Chamber Operations:
The Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to suspend operations. This decision was first communicated to Chamber members and the public on December 4, 2025. Since that announcement, many questions from members, partners, and community stakeholders have given us the opportunity to release this additional statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the suspension of operations and the reasons behind this decision.
Until further notice, the Chamber Board will continue to meet regularly to evaluate potential restructuring options that could allow for a scaled-back operation, a refreshed structure, or a different organizational model in the future.
The Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit business association, which differs significantly from a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit. A 501(c)(6) exists to support and advocate for the business community and is funded primarily through membership dues, sponsorships, and program-generated income. Unlike 501(c)(3) organizations, donations to a 501(c)(6) are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions, and the organization does not receive government operational funding.
Over the past several years, the Chamber has experienced a steady decline in membership, directly affecting its primary revenue stream. In response, the Board undertook major efforts in 2024 to stabilize finances, including a restructured membership model intended to rebuild sustainable income for the 2026 membership year. Unfortunately, rising costs—particularly insurance rates, technology and software expenses, general operating costs, and routine maintenance—continued to outpace revenue.
It is also important to reiterate that the Chamber is a completely independent organization. While it collaborates with local government, nonprofits, and the business community, it is not a branch of local government, nor does it receive operational funding from it. The Chamber’s ability to function relies entirely on voluntary membership, sponsorship, and program support.
Community traditions will continue uninterrupted by this suspension:
Candlelight Walk will continue in future years regardless of the Chamber’s operating status.
Autumn on Parade is, and always has been, fully independent from the Chamber. Although the Chamber has offered support when possible, Autumn on Parade will continue without any impact from this suspension.
The Chamber will continue to share updates and respond to questions as new developments arise. The Board of Directors remains committed to transparency as we move through this transitional period.
