We build upon the foundation of the Scout Oath, the Scout Law and Scouting America programming with a proactive focus on equity, inclusion, service, and connection to each other and our community. We meet each scout where they are at and provide the mentorship and safe environment needed to develop while having fun and building lifelong friendships for scouts and their families.

Today, as our troop is exploring the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum and camping at Camp Smith, Troop 452 is excited to share the news that Scouting America has approved continuing with combined gender troops. Our participation in the pilot program helped pioneer this long overdue option that offers scouting adventure and learning for all youth with no barriers.

If you’re interested in seeing our troop in action, we meet on Thursday nights at Hopkins Demonstration Forest, ANYONE aged 11-17 is welcome 🤗

Last month, Troop 452's newly elected leaders held their ILST training at Schenk Demonstration Forest (a location our charter with FFI allows access to for our troop to camp and learn). They did some fun communication exercises and planned the campout for the rest of the troop that came for the second night. They continued some work on the Cooking merit badge with some Dutch Oven campfire cooking and even got to see a special geology collection.

Summer Camp is often one of the highlights of scouting - it is a week of adventure together. Scouts choose their own path with merit badges (archery, rock climbing, first aid, etc) and even special adventures like water rafting or overnight horse ride. This July Troop 452 went to Camp Baldwin so there was a new challenge of cooking and cleaning for all their meals (even when exhausted from days full of adventures and activities)! There were challenges but way more rewards and fun than anything. They have already selected their summer camp location outside of Oregon for next year and are fundraising to pay their way to camp (if anybody wants to support them, reach out and they can make their pitch for popcorn sales)!

This past July Troop 452 took a trip to the Redwoods, including fun hikes exploring the majestic trees and cooling off with a swim. Some report this as one of their favorite trips so far with the Troop!

It has been a busy summer and that has resulted in falling behind on posting all the fun the Scouts have been having! In June the Troop took their first Backpacking trip up to the Mt. Hood area camping by Lower Rock Lake, with a day hike to Serene Lake. Scouts hiked just over 13 miles on this trip - about 5.1 miles in, 5 mile day hike to Serene Lake and about 3 miles hiking back out. A total of 8.1 miles with full packs is not bad for a first trek! Worked on map skills, water purification and lots of other skills this trip.

Every scout deserves to feel welcome and have the opportunity to learn and grow. Our troop is a diverse group of youth and families, formed with an intentional goal of acceptance and inclusion. All genders and youth are welcome to join in our scouting adventures and fun! Equity and Inclusion are a priority every day but June is a month for reminder, celebration and pride for some communities and others as allies!

Troop had a good turnout of scouts and family to honor our veterans last week, taking some time on a cool and lovely Friday evening to place flags on the final resting places of those that have served our country over the years heading into Memorial Day weekend. This was the first year for a few of us, though I expect it to be an ongoing tradition as it has been for several of our scouts. This is a rewarding opportunity to demonstrate just a small act of gratitude for those that have served in so many ways for us all.

This past year there have been a number of merit badge activities and awards. One some have been working on this spring is the Radio Merit Badge. The scouts and leaders had some pretty intensive learning over a couple Saturdays and enjoyed the chance to see some equipment in person thanks to Mountain Wave Search and Rescue bringing their communication van to the event! There are also scouts working together on Personal Fitness Merit Badge, convening in the park on a gorgeous day for some baseline measurements so they can track their progress over several months.
