SEP 9—At the September 9 meeting of the Upper Straits Lake Aquatic Advisory Board, members observed that lake levels appeared to be lower than normal. Upon further inquiry, it was determined that one of the boards had been temporarily removed from the dam by the Oakland County Water Resources Commission (OCWRC).

According to OCWRC, the removal was the result of incorrect water level readings. This action caused a temporary drop in lake levels. The board has since been replaced, and levels are expected to stabilize.

The USCLA Government Affairs Chair has reminded OCWRC that the “DamCam” provides daily monitoring of the dam, and that any adjustments should be communicated to USCLA in advance. Future updates related to dam operations will be posted on the USCLA website as they become available.

Every year in Oakland County there are needless injuries and accidents on the water. While alcohol is often a major factor, here's a quick reminder of other ways we can all stay safe out there:

-Boaters born after June 30, 1996, need a boating safety certificate to operate motorized vessels; PWC operators born after Dec. 31, 1978 (age 14+) also need one. However, it's recommended that everyone take a boater safety course.

-Every boat must carry enough USCG-approved life jackets of the proper size for everyone on board or being towed. Boats 16+ feet must also carry a throwable life jacket.

-Kids under 6 must wear a USCG-approved Type I or II PFD at all times while on the open deck of a moving vessel.

-All PWC riders must wear a life jacket, and if the PWC has an engine cutoff switch, the operator must attach the lanyard.

While the investigation has not concluded, this is a good reminder to run your blower and make sure your fire safety equipment is up to date.

We are investigating the cause of an earlier boat explosion, and are currently responding to a boat fire. We urge all boaters to verify that their equipment, including fire extinguishers, are safe and in proper working order.
