Last week I went out to check on the Eagles. I was expecting to see them working on their nest.

Instead, I saw Papa perched on an outer branch and above the nest. Mama was no where in sight. After about an hour, I returned and saw that Papa had left. As I walked away to leave the area, I heard vocalizations and went back to see Mama jumping out of the nest and landing on a limb.

She stayed on the limb and was looking down at it. She then began rubbing her beak on the limb which made me think she was feaking or cleaning her beak. Then I researched this further and discovered that she could have been sharpening her beak or doing beak maintenance. Since the beak is made of keratin and continuously grows, feaking wears down uneven edges which also prevents the beak from becoming overgrown. Nature never ceases to amaze me!!

Last week both Mama & Papa were flying in and out of their current nest and bringing in branches and sticks.

It is well known that nest building is a pair bonding activity for Eagles. Even after losing their Eaglets, nest building strengthens their bond with each other and reinforces their lifelong partnership. It may help them process their loss.

At this point, it is unknown if they are even thinking of having another clutch this season. I have read it is extremely rare according to data from nest-cam observations. With the summer heat fast approaching, it is our hope they are just building a nest to prepare for the next nesting season.

I want to point out in the second photo, Mama did not have a stick or a branch. She had flown out and returned empty taloned. I like the perspective of her tail flare and her legs dropped. In the fourth photo, Papa gently glides back into the nest with such grace. The last photo shows Mama on the left and Papa on the right resting before flying out for more sticks or branches. While enjoying the water this Memorial Day weekend, remember these water safety tips:

Swim with a Buddy: Never swim alone and keep a close eye on children.
Wear Life Jackets: Ensure everyone, especially children and inexperienced swimmers, wears a properly fitting life jacket.
Check Conditions: Be aware that strong currents and cold water can be very dangerous!
Stay Hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're in the sun.
Know Your Limits: Don’t push yourself beyond your comfort level.
Let’s prioritize safety while having fun! Wishing you a sunny and safe weekend! 🌟

What an incredible day at the Izzy Animal Rescue Festival!
With the amazing support of our volunteers and the dedicated State Park staff, we connected with our community and raised awareness for animal rescue. A heartfelt thank you to the animal presenters, musicians, and support organizations—your energy and passion made our festival truly special and so much fun!

This festival was a tribute to Isabelle (Izzy) Cassio, a Folsom-born animal lover whose memory lives on after her passing in 2022. Her love for animals inspired us to create this event—to uplift local animal groups, educate our community, and celebrate the joy animals bring to our lives.

Our Eagles are still working on their newest nest.

On the day I arrived, I saw Mama bringing in a couple of sticks and placing them in the nest. I could tell she must have started pretty early (maybe at sunrise) as she was really panting at times while she rested in the nest.

I love watching the Eagles when they are nest building. Their focus and determination shows up in their eyes when they take off and then return to the nest. I love how Mama looked as she was placing a stick in the nest.

This nest location will not be disclosed.
