Hiking in areas like Blue Lakes, Grouse Ridge, and Kennedy Meadows are all permanently protected thanks to conservation easements and public ownership of these areas. The Stewardship Council invested in additional trails at Bucks Lake, Fall River Lake, Lake Spaulding, Hat Creek, and Manzanita Lake to increase recreational access in those areas. As one of the Beneficial Public Values we were charged with protecting, outdoor recreation was an imprortant consideration in future management of the land. The Maidu Summit Consortium is working to make Tásmam Koyóm (the Maidu name for a valley located west of Lake Almanor in Plumas County, California) into the first Tribal Cultural Park in California. This valley was an important Maidu population center within the traditional homeland of the Mountain Maidu for many generations. The Maidu people steward the land and the creatures that exist on the land and plan to host workshops to teach others Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and practices. MSC received the property along with 4 properties near Lake Almanor through the Land Conservation Commitment process. See more at https://www.scstory.org/msc.

The Maidu Summit Consortium (MSC) received five properties in their ancestral territory at Tàsmam Koyòm (Humbug Valley) and around  Lake Almanor totaling 2,935 acres. MSC is comprised of nine Mountain Maidu groups including recognized and petitioning tribes, non-profit organizations, and grassroo...

The Shasta Crayfish may not be the cuddliest of creatures, but it has a role to play and is now endangered due to habitat loss and competition from invasive signal crayfish. Spring Rivers Foundation Outdoor Education is focused on protecting the remaining population and we were able to fund a habitat restoration project that created a safe place for Shasta Crayfish to regrow their population. See more about the project – https://www.scstory.org/shasta-crayfish-enhancement

The I80 corridor gives access to a Sierra Nevada recreational playground for Californians from the Bay area and Sacramento regions, but there are also huge impacts and development pressure that go with the easy access . PG&E Watershed Lands protected by the Stewardship Council help fill in the conservation landscape that includes a checkerboard pattern of ownership due to grants to the railroads. These lands are open to the public but also have important habitat values and safeguard water quality. https://www.scstory.org/i80-corridor-habitat

Since receiving almost 900 acres of their ancestral homeland, the Potter Valley Tribe has led workshops on native resource use, pest and disease management, least-toxic pesticide use, an Inter-Tribal Environmental Youth Campout, market gardening, and home canning. Every year since 2013, they have sponsored an Eel River Cleanup in the spring to remove debris and improve the habitat for wildlife along the Eel River corridor. The Stewardship Council recommended over 4,700 acres of forestland be donated to UC Berkeley Forests to develop and test appropriate management strategies for forested watersheds that will flourish under different climate change scenarios. We also supported research grants to UC Berkeley Forests to create permanent research plots for monitoring and experimenting with treatments. Read more at https://www.scstory.org/uc

Long distance trails offer a chance to really get away from it all and connect with nature in a deeper way, while offering access to places that most people don’t make it to. The Stewardship Council is helping to remove a barrier along the 80 mile Pines to Mines corridor that is in development and also ensured protections along the Pacific Crest Trail that passes through multiple areas of the PG&E Watershed Lands. https://www.scstory.org/recreation

Building up the next generation of leaders to take on the challenges of habitat loss, climate change, and water supply is key to our success. The PCrew in Plumas County is an awesome partnership that brings urban youth up to the Sierra Nevada every year to work hard, learn nature based solutions, and have a great time – check out a day on the PCrew organized by Sierra Institute and Feather River Land Trust - https://www.scstory.org/youthinvestments?pgid=l9xdnfgt-fcd69ed3-078b-4664-875e-0c50673e9039

Lake Almanor is the largest property PG&E owns and a critical breeding ground for deer and waterfowl. The lake draws recreational uses and supports the local economies. Feather River Land Trust is our partner in protecting this important habitat and recreational resource - balancing the beneficial public values to make sure the lake can be used by wildlife and humans together.

California is a biodiversity hotspot with an unusually high concentration of endemic plants but has lost over 70% of its primary vegetation. A biodiversity hotspot contains irreplaceable areas to the plants and animals that live there. The Stewardship Council included Habitat for Fish, Wildlife, and Plants as one of the beneficial public values to be protected on all the properties we placed conservation easements and conservation covenants on. Take a look at just a fraction of the plants and animals that depend on these areas at https://www.scstory.org/plants-and-animals

Much of California’s water flows through the PG&E Watershed Lands that the Stewardship Council worked to protect. All together 1200 miles of rivers and streams and over 42,000 acres of reservoirs, ponds, and lakes were protected with conservation easements. Learn more at https://www.scstory.org/water #
