Save the American River Association, Inc. (SARA)

Save the American River Association, Inc. (SARA) Guardians of the American River and Parkway since 1961. These threats will continue to multiply as water supplies dwindle and our regional population increases.

We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization with a volunteer base of several hundred dedicated members and a Board of Directors who reflect the range of expertise required to protect and enhance the wildlife habitat, fishery, and recreational resources of the American River Parkway. The thousands of recreational users of the American River and the Parkway are often unaware of the many continuing thr

eats to their enjoyment. Population growth will put an even greater burden on this unique urban habitat as visitors continue to rely on the parkway for their recreational and nature appreciation experiences. Further, the American River’s resources will become even more attractive to water purveyors, developers and property owners who wish to expand their own holdings contrary to the public interest. SARA’s central role is to anticipate these threats, and to coordinate informed actions to stop them. We urge you to join with us in protecting our priceless asset represented by the River and Parkway. SARA depends on its members and friends for the financial resources needed to carry out our mission.

The Board of Supervisors (BOS) has scheduled a vote on the Upper Westside project for Tuesday, June 16 at 2 pm. Please plan to attend at 700 H St, Sacramento, give a 2 minute spoken comment and/or, submit a written comment.

The vote is to approve or deny this project which will rezone over 2,000 acres of farmland to enable residential and commercial development.

The fundamental reason to oppose this project is that the County should not build an unincorporated city, the size of Galt, in a flood zone, next to the Sacramento River. It will destroy valuable farmland and wildlife habitat. The project will add over 20,000 people to Natomas and will not improve main transportation arteries, resulting in increased traffic and congestion. This project also flouts long-standing agreements between the City and the County.

Natomas Development: Upper Westside Vote! The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a vote on the Upper Westside project for Tuesday, June 16 at 2pm. Plan to attend at 700 H St, Sacramento. https://www.ecosacramento.net/2026/06/upper-westside-vote/

"These enforcement efforts are about more than issuing citations," said Commander Trevor Schnitzius. "Our goal is to address the public's concerns regarding unsafe e-bike and e-motorcycle activity, improve safety for everyone who uses the trail and educate riders about the rules that are in place to protect all visitors. Working alongside our partners at Sacramento County Probation and CHP allows us to address these issues more effectively, and visitors should expect to see continued enforcement throughout the Parkway."

Park Rangers remind visitors that Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on the American River Parkway Trail, e-motorcycles are not permitted on the trail, and all trail users must comply with the posted 15 mph speed limit. Riders are encouraged to familiarize themselves with applicable regulations before visiting the Parkway.

These enforcement operations will continue as part of Sacramento County Regional Parks' ongoing commitment to public safety and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all Parkway visitors.

Sacramento County Park Rangers, working in partnership with the Sacramento County Probation UTV Team and California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers, recently conducted a targeted enforcement operation along the American River Multi-Use Trail between Watt Ave and Chase Drive.

The operation focused on addressing growing concerns related to unsafe e-bike and e-motorcycle activity on the Parkway while educating riders about regulations designed to protect all trail users. As e-bikes and similar vehicles become increasingly popular, Rangers have observed an increase in violations involving excessive speeds, unauthorized vehicles on the trail and riders who may not fully understand the rules governing their use.

We’re partnering with the City of Sacramento Fire Department and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District to conduct a series of prescribed burns throughout June as part of our ongoing fire risk reduction efforts.

The first prescribed burn is scheduled for June 7-9 in the Woodlake area of the American River Parkway.

The controlled burns are designed to reduce wildfire risk, improve ecosystem health and provide valuable training opportunities for fire personnel. Burn operations will be conducted under carefully monitored conditions to ensure public safety and minimize impacts to surrounding communities.

Your feedback is requested! The California Natural Resources Agency and California State Parks are conducting a statewide survey to better understand how Californians use, experience, and value trails and outdoor spaces.

The survey takes as little as 5 minutes to complete and is open to all California residents. The survey closes this Monday, June 8.

Survey findings will inform two major statewide efforts: Climate Bond grant criteria, helping direct funding toward outdoor recreation priorities that reflect community needs across California and; Recreational Trails Plan update, helping shape the future of trail planning, investment, and outdoor access statewide.

Every response and every share helps build a stronger, more complete picture of how Californians use and value trails and outdoor spaces.

On Saturday, June 6, join our friends with Miridae Mobile Nursery at Honored Elders Day at the State Indian Museum (2618 K Street, Sacramento, CA, 95816) from 9am-4pm. Honored Elders Day celebrates Native American Elders and recognizes their contributions and lived experiences. While this event is free and open to all, Honored Elders Day is meant to be a space for families and friends to reconnect and share memories. Elders will be served free lunch and gifts of appreciation (like native plants). There will also be cultural dancers, speakers, and artisans selling their wares.

The 47th annual Honored Elders Day at the State Indian Museum is this coming Saturday, June 6th, from 9am to 4pm!

This annual event is held to recognize the contributions and lived experiences of Native American Elders in our communities. Elders are invited to the State Indian Museum for lunch, gifts, and a cultural dance program. In addition to recognition, California State Parks, the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation (CIHCF), and our event planning partners hope to provide a safe place for families and friends to connect and share joys and memories together.

Native American Elders are encouraged to join! To help ensure a smooth event, please let us know beforehand if you plan to attend this year's event. Early registration helps our planning efforts to provide enough gifts and meals for participating Elders.

Additionally, the governor’s office will present an official proclamation celebrating the contributions of California’s Native people.

Please help spread the word! Family, friends, and the public are all welcome to attend!

While the pre-registration has now closed, you are still welcome to check in on the day of the event. Registered Elders will receive a catered lunch and gifts of appreciation from the community (while supplies last).

Who is an Elder? A person may be identified as an Elder by their Tribe or, more generally, be age 60 or older and carry important teachings, traditions, and responsibilities within their community.
