Yesterday’s industrial fire made one thing painfully clear, the Orange Fire Department is severely understaffed. According to NFPA 1710, the initial alarm assignment for a structure fire requires 15–17 firefighters on scene within 8 minutes, with a minimum of 4 firefighters on every engine or ladder. That is the minimum standard for the first-due response, before any additional alarms. What The City of Orange Fire Department actually sent:
• Engine 1 – 3 firefighters
• Engine 2 – 3 firefighters
• Engine 3 – 2 firefighters
• Ladder 1 – 1 firefighter
• Battalion Chief – 1
• Total: 10 firefighters.
We are deeply grateful for our mutual-aid partners who stepped up. But the City of Orange Fire Department should be meeting or exceeding the national standard, not falling short of it. Running below minimum staffing standards is a disservice to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day, and an even greater disservice to the citizens who rely on a professional fire department to protect them.
Our firefighters and our community deserve better.
