A Partnership Built One Freezer at a Time

"Ten years ago, I reached out to Sandra Stuart-Killea, then CEO of Waste Not Want Not, and asked if Pie in the Sky could become part of its food-rescue program. We started humbly—as a fill-in pickup whenever another organization could not make its scheduled run. Before long, we became a regular weekly partner.

Then one day, Sandra called with a question that would change everything: “Do you have freezer space?”

The honest answer was no.

Waste Not Florida had just begun rescuing short-dated food from Trader Joe’s, and Sandra described beautiful cuts of meat—steaks, chicken, pork chops, salmon, and more—that needed a home. This food was simply too precious to waste, so I immediately went out and bought a small freezer.

Not long afterward, Sandra called again: “We have more meat.”

I bought a second freezer—and eventually a third. All three were kept at my house, filled with food that would soon become something very special for our seniors.

Because of Waste Not Want Not, seniors living on limited incomes enjoyed filet mignon, thick-cut pork chops, Alaskan salmon, and other foods they rarely, if ever, had the opportunity to purchase for themselves. Every delivery felt like a celebration. These were more than groceries; they were unexpected treats that reminded our seniors that they were valued and deserving of something wonderful.

Over the years, Waste Not Want Not has continued to provide bread, sweets, frozen sandwiches, protein, and other goodies that are perfect accompaniments to the fresh produce Pie in the Sky delivers. Sometimes the simplest foods bring the greatest joy. Two slices of bread and an egg—oh, my! The humble egg sandwich remains a favorite.

Sandra and the dedicated Waste Not Want Not volunteers, who rescue hundreds of thousands of pounds of food each year, have been treasured partners in Pie in the Sky’s mission. Their work has helped us stretch every dollar, add variety to our deliveries, and bring comfort and dignity to countless senior neighbors in need.

Sandra has now retired, and Dr. Kathleen Spears has taken on the leadership role. She has carried forward the generous spirit upon which the organization was built while continuing to grow its reach and impact.

In addition to the amazing volunteers that we count on to rescue, sort, and distribute food to people in need, we also have a group of awesome volunteers who sort and prepare items rescued for our partners or for our yard sale.

This group is called the "Yard Sale Ladies" (sorry Joe and Bob - you've been outnumbered). These ladies sort, distribute and price items for our sale. Stop by and visit them Tuesdays & Thursdays between 10 am and 2 pm to say hello or shop our retail location.

Thanks to our friend Tone from The WELL Jax, the ladies are sporting matching t-shirts today!

A HUGE thank you to the awesome and amazing Jacksonville Jaguars and Delaware North for donating hundreds of pounds of healthy, delicious food today to help us in our fight to end hunger!

Thanks to a strategic investment by Baptist Health Jacksonville for a refrigerated van, we were able to capture more healthy salads, fruits, and meat - totalling close to 1,600 pounds! Getting more healthy foods into the community! Plus, our refrigerated van helps to maintain the safety and integrity of cold foods we rescue! 🚐🥗🍉

All 1,600 pounds has already been put to use fighting hunger including a good amount shared with The Way Free Medical Clinic, Inc. to be used as part of their food is medicine program and The WELL Jax who provides meals to our unhoused neighbors.

Tell you what...the stadium may be under construction 🚧 🏗 - but the Jaguars' love, passion, and heart for its community certainly is not! Go Jags 🐆📣

🎉❤️Please join us as we celebrate someone who has become such an important part of the Waste Not Want Not family...Linda McKenzie!!

Linda first came to Waste Not 10 years ago looking for something to help take her mind off a heartbreaking loss. What she found was a place to serve and what Waste Not found was a remarkable woman who would give far more than we could ever have imagined.

For a decade, Linda has poured her heart into our volunteers. She has led with compassion, built relationships, and always makes people feel welcome. Linda has become someone our volunteers know they can count on and can hardly say no to. She has weathered leadership transitions, changes, challenges, and growth, and has done so with remarkable style and grace.

Linda, you have given Waste Not so much more than your time. You have given us your heart, your compassion, your friendship, Torin, and your unwavering commitment to our mission.

We are so grateful for you and everything you do to help make Waste Not Want Not the special place it is.

This year will mark the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. A day that was marred by tragedy, yet showed the remarkable strength and fortitude of our great United States of America. The Rotary Club of Orange Park Sunrise will remember this day by offering "Flags for Heroes" a program where businesses and community members can celebrate and commemorate a hero (or heroes) in their life with a United States flag.

Waste Not Florida has been selected to receive 50% of flag purchases made using the QR code pictured below. What a great way to remember 9/11, honor a hero, AND support the mission of Waste Not Want Not!
