In Minneapolis, a program called Avivo Village uses a warehouse to provide shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Instead of large shared sleeping areas, the building is divided into about 100 individual rooms.
Each room has a locking door, giving residents a private place to sleep and keep their belongings. The shelter is especially important during colder months, when outdoor conditions can become dangerous.
Support services are also provided inside the same building. Residents can access mental health care, addiction treatment programs, and help finding long-term housing.
People stay in the rooms while taking part in programs meant to help them move into more permanent housing. The setup combines private sleeping spaces and support services within one location.
A warehouse once used as a large open space was turned into a shelter with individual rooms and on-site services for the people staying there.
