Hoods For Heroes (H4H) Extinguishing Firefighter Cancer
Jeff Rountree and Bill Hamilton, are the founders of the Hoods for Heroes Foundation. As NE Florida business owners and Rotarians, part of their Rotary service is spending a lot of time working on projects to help others. In early 2018, they created the Firefighter Sound-Off event in Clay County, Florida and learned about the many dangers facing our firefighters and EMS in the fire profession. Their work with various cancer and support foundations brought even more shocking information.
Were you aware that firefighters risk for cancer is 6-8 times higher than the general population? The more they dug into this problem, the more they became educated on the dangers other than actually fighting the fire. They have also learned about the challenges that local townships and cities are faced with providing budgets and equipment for these brave heroes and developed an idea of how we all could make a difference.
Did you know that one of the most vulnerable areas of a firefighter is their face and neck? Why? Because caustic chemicals can easily permeate the thin skin in these delicate areas. Firefighters are generally protected with hoods worn under their gear but that protection only goes as far as their budgets. The industry has come along way improving gear for firefighters and new technology provides cost-effective hoods that provide better, longer protection. They have found that many departments are using gear that no longer meets the effectiveness rating because they have no new gear to replace it. Some are having to use equipment that is well past it’s saftey recommendations for washes.
That’s where you can help. Hoods for Heroes is committed to raising funds so that every firefighter in the United States can have access to high quality particulate blocking hoods to keep them safe. These hoods provide carcinogen protection by greatly reducing soot and harmful chemicals absorbed into their body through their face and neck. It might seem like a really small effort in the fight against cancer but it will make the biggest difference.
Fire departments continue to struggle gaining the funding needed for lifesaving equipment for our fire fighters to save lives and property ...so now it’s our turn to take part in the battle to save their lives.
Donations can be sent via our website www.HoodsforHeroes.org. For as little as $125, you can adopt a firefighter with a life saving piece of equipment!
