Last week, Syria’s National Commission for Missing Persons confirmed the deaths of the six children of Dr. Rania Al-Abbasi after years of investigation and evidence review.
The confirmation is devastating not only for the Al-Abbasi family, but for all Syrians who have spent years searching for answers about their loved ones. Taken alongside their parents from their home in Damascus in 2013, these children are a symbol to the thousands of families still waiting to learn the fate of relatives who were detained, disappeared, or killed during the conflict.
Today, we remember these innocent children and stand with their family as they confront a loss that no parent, sibling, or community should ever endure. Their story is a painful reminder of the human cost of injustice and the importance of uncovering the truth for every missing person in Syria.
At the American Coalition for Syria, we remain committed to bring organizations together to advocate for truth, justice, accountability, and support for the families of the missing. As Syria continues its path toward recovery and reconciliation, ensuring that the fate of the disappeared is uncovered and documented, must remain a priority. Every family deserves answers, and every victim deserves to be remembered.
May the memories of these six children, alongside the memories of all Syrians who were disappeared, be honored, may their loved ones find strength, and may justice prevail for all victims of enforced disappearance.
