Ever notice how our actions usually have a deeper driver behind them? Tony Robbins talks about seven core human needs that influence why people do what they do.
The seven needs are:
• Certainty – feeling safe and secure
• Variety – experiencing change and challenge
• Significance – feeling valued or important
• Love and Connection – relationships and belonging
• Growth – learning and becoming better
• Contribution – helping others and making a difference
• Meaning and Purpose – living a life that matters
What I found interesting is that when you look at these through a biblical lens, Scripture actually speaks to each one of these human desires.
• Certainty – The Bible teaches that our true security comes from God, not circumstances. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
• Variety – Life has seasons, change, and challenges that God uses to shape us. Ecclesiastes reminds us there is a time and season for everything.
• Significance – Our value comes from being created by God and called His children, not from status or recognition.
• Love and Connection – Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God and love others. Relationships are central to the Christian life.
• Growth – Scripture calls believers to grow in wisdom, faith, and character. Spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey.
• Contribution – Jesus taught that greatness comes through serving others. We are called to care for people and make a difference in their lives.
• Meaning and Purpose – The Bible teaches that our ultimate purpose is to know God and reflect Him in the world.
So here’s something to think about today.
Look at your actions and run them through this filter.
Why did I respond that way?
Why did that situation frustrate me?
Why am I pursuing that goal?
Many times the answer points back to one of these needs trying to be met.
The deeper question becomes where we are looking to fulfill them. When our certainty, identity, and purpose are rooted in God, everything else starts to fall into place.
