Life Beads Life Beads African Jewelry offers beautiful handmade jewelry that provides better livelihood for women in rural African communities

We love jewelry, and we love the women of Northern Uganda. We established Life Beads in 2013 to empower these women to better their lives and their community. We call them “Life Beads” because through the creation of jewelry, these women are given the opportunity for sustainable living. We believe that true empowerment begins with opportunity, and Life Beads helps provide a way to make that happen.

MEET Monica!!
MONICA was born in Pader in 1989. She had just been weaned from the breast when her parents were both killed by the rebels. She and her two brothers came to live with their grandfather in Kinene. When the war intensified, they went to Paicho IDP Camp where she dug in a garden to earn money for food which was delivered to the camp once a month. There was a shortage of food and water and no medicines or vaccines. Many died while in the camp. One night the rebels entered the camp and took her and five others, tying them together with ropes connected to rocks. The government troops arrived and in the exchange of gunfire, the girls ran into a hut. The army dispersed and left them in the house. Monica said that she knows it was God who saved them.

Her aunt from Kampala then came and brought her to Kampala to babysit for five years then returned her to the camp in 2005. She married and gave birth to two boys while in the camp then divorced. In 2007, she left the camp and came back to her grandfather in Kinene. She remarried in 2010 and gave birth to a little girl. In 2014, she gave birth to a little boy. She is making jewelry for school fees and medical care for her children.
Monica is extremely skilled in cutting the paper used to roll all of our handmade beads and a table leader. It is a joy to watch God work in the sassy, beautiful woman's heart! ❤️❤️❤️

MEET Scovia!! Please take a minute to hear her story!
Scovia was born in Pader in 1989, one of eight children. Two of the children died from measles. Her parents divorced in 1995. As her mother was preparing to take them to an IDP camp in 1997, Scovia was captured by the rebels and held for nine years. She was so young the rebels had to carry her because she couldn’t walk the long distances. They finally reached Palotake, Joseph Kony’s largest base camp, near the South Sudan border. When they reached the rebel camp, many died from cholera. She had cholera and they were separated from the others. They were placed near a well so they could get water but had no food. Twenty to thirty people died each day. Even though they were sick and weak, they were forced to train as soldiers. She was taken for six months’ training and given a gun in 1999. In 2000, they were taken to fight the SPLA (Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army) soldiers. She was shot three times during the crossfire and two bullets still remain in her body. In 2004, she surrendered to the Ugandan army at Awach. She was 14 and was brought to the barracks in Gulu along with five others. She was then taken to World Vision Rehabilitation Center for one month then returned to an IDP camp in Pader where she was reunited with her mother. Because of the essential supplies she received from the rehabilitation center, the village people became jealous and tried to poison her. She almost died. Her mother tried to take her to the witch doctor, but she refused and just started crying out to God. God heard her cry and led her to a group of worshippers. She joined them and started worshipping with them. Scovia met her husband and moved to Kinene. Scovia has 5 children now. She says God has been so good to her.
Scovia is one of our table leaders and one of only two women who cut all the paper for each piece of jewelry you see! We are so thankful for God's provision for Scovia and the thougtfulness and smiles she brings to the bead room! We love you Scovia!!❤️❤️❤️
