Hybrid Poplars

Hybrid Poplars Hybrid Poplar (OP367, NE41) We have planted Hybrid Poplars from cuttings with much success. It is by far the most in demand. It will reach about 45 feet.

Some of the Areas planted include fields, areas that do not perk, have poor soils, wet soils, as perimeter/property boundry, steep hillsides, erosion control and also as buffers. They have performed well in poor soil so imagine how they performed in our fertile soils. About the trees: OP-367 is often referred to as the work horse of the Hybrid Poplars. You can expect as much as 16 feet of annual

growth in normal soil conditions and normal rainfall. It can actually thrive in wet soil conditions and does not have a problematic tap root. They will grow to 90 - 100 feet and have a span of about 45 feet at maturity. Uses include pulp, furniture, OSB chips, bio ChYP for energy production. For the average homeowner they provide ample nut/mess free shade, Line property and fences and driveways. For those that heat with firewood it is common to hear they have one acre planted in op367 to provide firewood for life. Some people heat exclusively with this model. Most tell me they harvest the tree before any part of the tree is big enough to require spliting (Why work too hard). The tree will rejuvenate from the stump and you will have a tree ready to harvest in no time. They will grow faster after the first harvest because of the healthy and established root system. They are considered a hard wood albiet not as hard as oak or hickory but they do not have the soot issues of Pine and burn much cleaner. NE - 41 has been dubbed the "Golf Course Tree" for its perfect rounded tree form at maturity. This tree will grow 10 -15 feet per year in normal soils and rainfall. Again no mess as there is no nut or flower. It is not prone to losing branches and spliting as is the popular bradford pear. It has many of the same qualities as the above tree but its primary use is ornamental. It is used as firewood but not quite as successfully as the afore mentioned op367.
