Today, Team Abbis Echo showed up in a big way at the Dash for Donation 5K. Whether you walked, ran, donated, or cheered us on from miles away, thank you. Every message, prayer, hug, and act of support reminded us that Abbi’s legacy continues to touch so many lives.

We hope today’s event inspired conversations about becoming an organ donor. One decision has the power to save and heal countless lives.

Become a donor, save a life
This Dash for Donation is deeply personal to our family because it honors both the gift of life received and the gift of life given.

Matt was given a second chance at life through a heart transplant. Because of the selfless decision of an organ donor and their family, he was able to receive the heart that continues to beat strong today. Every step he takes is a reminder of the incredible impact organ donation can have on someone’s life.

Our daughter, Abigail (Abbi) Marie Carey, became a hero in a different way. On February 25, 2023, at just 15 years old, Abbi passed away. Through organ donation, she gave the gift of life and hope to others during our family’s darkest moment. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the recipients who were given a second chance because of her generosity.

We walk and run in honor of both journeys—Matt’s journey of receiving life and Abbi’s legacy of giving life. Their stories are connected by the extraordinary power of organ donation.

Organ donation transforms tragedy into hope, loss into life, and remembrance into a lasting legacy. Every donor, recipient, and family has a story.

I posted this on February 25th 2026. This picture was sent to us by Abbi's lung recipient. She took it on the beach in Florida. It is amazing how God works. It came up on my phone today, and I felt I needed to share it on this page.

Three years ago today, I walked down the hallway to the operating room doors. I had gone into surgery myself two years before that to get a heart transplant. Now I was losing part of my heart all over again. You stayed with us for a week after the accident. You did it to give us all a chance to say goodbye. You were always the caring, loving one. I talk to one of the people who, shortly after you went through those doors, received a second chance at life. The person who got your lungs has been gracious, humble, and thankful every single day since that day. They sent me this picture. This picture exists today for all of us because of you. We were blessed to be invited to the graduation in Ripley yesterday. This would have been the graduation class that Abbi would have been in. It was a good time, and we really appreciate the opportunity it gave us to honor and remember her friends, classmates, and her memories.
