Truly a servant and patriot.
As our prayers for the family of police Sgt. Stephen Williams continue, I'd like to bring you a story about a man who has been encouraging police and investigators as they work the case. His name is Roy Brook, and it seems that Mr. Brook tends to appear when tragedy occurs and comfort is needed.
Roy Brook retired about five years ago. His hobby in retirement?
Proudly carrying his American flag.
Proudly honoring those who have served us.
He loves Old Glory.
He loves our country.
He loves to comfort those in need of comforting.
As dozens of first responders, police, detectives and investigators swarmed the Motel 8 in Moody less than two days ago, Roy Brook stood at attention and proudly held an American flag. He was there to honor Sgt. Stephen Williams, who hours early had been shot and killed.
Roy Brook stood at attention in silence for hours, staring at the crime scene.
He kept his distance, assuring that Sgt. William's comrades could do their job.
Roy Brook has traveled our state and our country for over five years now, appearing at the sites of where policemen, firemen and servicemen and women have lost their lives.
He stands at attention for hours.
Why? Roy tells me that he loves our country and he appreciates the work of those who give back.
He tells me he wants to give back to them.
For hours on Wednesday, Roy Brook stood at attention holding an American flag, honoring the late Sgt. Williams.
Yesterday afternoon, Roy gave a salute toward the hotel room, loaded his flag in his car and went home to his wife Dawn.
Roy Brook will be carrying that flag to another site soon- perhaps to the scene of an accident or a crime, perhaps the National Cemetery in Montevallo (which he does often).
He will stand at attention for hours.
He will hold Old Glory.
He will dutifully honor those who have given so much to us.
