Pariyatti

Pariyatti Providing resources related to the Buddha's teaching and Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. Goen What's in a Name? She was following S.N.

In the winter of 1985-86, a Vipassana student accepted a small loan from fellow meditators in order to start a project of making books and tapes available by mail order to other Vipassana meditators. Goenka’s advice, that no meditation center should sell these materials directly, and that some student(s) should be found to do so separately; and as a service to Vipassana students as a whole. Goenka

ji specified that they could set reasonable prices, and make a profit for this service. So the business model was originally defined by this guideline. The subject of a name for her fledgling business naturally came up. The idea arose to call it Pariyatti Book Service, and it seemed to stick. This choice was especially appreciated, since it contained the word "service". Even though it was to be operated like any small business; it was understood from the beginning, that it would not make much money. It was a chance to provide service while making a small living. Another aspect of the name was appreciated; that the word "pariyatti," meaning theoretical teachings of the Buddha, was a Pāli word. It also tied the name to the Theravāda tradition, and it was the correlate of the word "paṭipatti," meaning to practice.

30 years young

The Pariyatti we have today was created by the merger of the Pariyatti Book Service, (see above), and Vipassana Research Publications of America, (VRPA). VRPA started operations in January 1996, (see here), and merged with Pariyatti Book Service, later that year. In the following years, Pariyatti took on North American distribution of books produced by the Buddhist Publication Society of Sri Lanka, and the Pali Text Society of the UK. In the early 2000's, Pariyatti maintained a full staff with offices in Seattle. During this period, it never turned a profit, and was sustained by generous contributions from a founding supporter. After the dot-com bust, funds were not as easily available; and Pariyatti started the process of becoming a registered non-profit organization. In 2002, Pariyatti received recognition from the US IRS, as a 501(c)(3) Charitable Non Profit Organization. During its early years as a non-profit, Pariyatti tried to maintain a full staff; but ran into significant losses annually, (more info here). This was a period in Pariyatti's history, when even the needs of payroll were difficult to meet. In subsequent years, staffing levels at Pariyatti were significantly reduced; and now, a very small staff is able to run operations. Pariyatti has a small hard-working team that leverages technology, and the support of many volunteers. In recent years, in addition to maintaining the Bookstore and growing its Publishing program; Pariyatti has launched Pilgrimages and Pāli Workshops. There remains much work to be done; worldwide interest in the teachings of the Buddha, continue to grow. https://www.pariyatti.org/About/tabid/96/Default.aspx

The Scientific Approach to Buddhism and The Appeal of Buddhism of Bodhi Leaves No. 55. Two essays by Francis Story, narrated by Christa Michel

Excerpt:
So far, science has helped us, in its own way, to understand the Buddhist principles of anicca, dukkha and anattā, for the account it gives of the universe is completely in accord with Buddhist philosophy. The process of universal flux and the inherent substancelessness of matter is a fundamental of Buddhism. More than that, the process has actually been observed in the course of Buddhist meditation; the atomic constituents have been seen and felt, and the dukkha of their arising and passing away has made itself known to the mind which has stopped identifying the process with what we call “self,” the illusion of sakkāya diṭṭhi.The supramundane knowledge of Buddhism begins where science leaves us, but because Buddhism is based upon direct perception of ultimate truth, it is only natural that the discoveries of science should confirm it as they are doing today.

The workshops are set up similarly to a 10-day Vipassana course, with recordings of Goenkaji’s chanting played in the morning and three group sittings a day.

Like Vipassana courses in our tradition, Pariyatti Pāli workshops are offered on a donation (dāna) basis; the teacher receives no remuneration for teaching, and all course expenses are covered by donations from previous students. Meals are prepared by volunteering Dhamma servers.

Serving a Pāli workshop is a wonderful and rare opportunity to develop one's pāramīs, strengthen one's practice, and meet many Dhamma friends. During breaks servers can join classes and receive the benefit of learning the direct words of the Buddha.

Journey Of Insight Meditation is a title by Eric Lerner, the audiobook is narrated by regular Pariyatti volunteer Jonathan Nelson

Excerpt:
Six of us arrived at the International Meditation Center in Rangoon late in the afternoon of the day the retreat in memory of U Ba Khin was to begin. A charming, middle-aged Burmese gentleman who produced movies for a living met us at the gate and immediately took us on a tour of the grounds. After all the build-up and expectation that had surrounded our trip, it was difficult to appreciate the fact that we were actually there. All we could do was gawk as we followed our host around. The most prominent feature of the Center was the arrangement of the meditation cells, the small individual rooms where one was expected to sit in darkness and silence for most of the day. They surrounded a large central pagoda that contained the shrine room where U Ba Khin himself had sat in meditation.

Buddhism in a Value-changing Society is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 148 by P. D. Premasiri
Narrated by Jayashree Tata Nagaraj

Excerpt:
What Buddhism maintains is that we are capable of bringing about a change inwardly. One cannot change all the factors in the outside world in accordance with one’s own desires and wants, for the external determinants are too numerous and diverse. People have various psychological tendencies such as jealousy, miserliness and competitiveness. These psychological tendencies are responsible for the breakdown of social morality. However, Buddhism believes that these psychological tendencies, triggered off by the material conditions of life, can be changed inwardly.

We are coming to the end of another year here at Pariyatti where we dedicated ourselves to providing valuable and inspirational resources related to the teachings of the Buddha. The Buddha’s teaching is a precious jewel, and we are so fortunate to have access to it in our lives.

Pariyatti aims to serve people from all backgrounds. We keep the print books and eBooks affordable, provide a free PDF of most titles that we publish, and offer many other resources at no cost. All our audiobooks are available free of charge, as is most of the audio and video material—as well as a large number of resources for students of S.N. Goenka.

As a non-profit organization, Pariyatti relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to supplement the revenue received from sales, in order to make up for the annual deficit. Once a year, through December, we run a fundraiser and goal of the 2025 campaign is $100,000.

Donating is possible in various ways:
