Our goal is to raise awareness about su***de and to promote su***de prevention and education. This is a timed race that follows 13.1 miles of the area's most scenic views. The race starts at the YMCA North, Onalaska and follows the Great River State Trail to the Historic Trempeleau Hotel in Trempeleau, WI. We also have a 5K run/walk to honor and show appreciation for our loved ones, both living an
d passed, who have struggled with thoughts of su***de. All proceeds of the Mini Donut Half Marathon are donated to benefit different local charities and organizations that focus primarily on su***de education and prevention. What do mini donuts have to do with running half marathons you might ask? Committee member Karla Olson dreamed up this race as a way to remember her dad, Mike "Oly" Olson, who lost his life to su***de at the age of 59. For years, Oly owned and operated Oly's Mini Donut Express, a mini donut trailer you could find at local fairs and festivals. Oly was seen most happy while running the Mini Donut Express and he loved to make people laugh. The Mini Donut Half Marathon is in honor of Mike's memory. We want to celebrate the life and influence that one person can have on an entire community. This half marathon also gives us the opportunity to raise awareness for su***de and mental health issues and honor all of our loved ones who have suffered from depression and thoughts of su***de. Su***de is a leading cause of death in our country, but it IS preventable. Even one su***de is too many. Together we raise awareness for a serious issue. We also have fun along the way, get in a great workout, and run through some of the most beautiful views in the area. And, thanks to Oly's inspiration, we always eat some donuts at the finish line!
