Made New is a "makerspace with a mission" in Omaha, Nebraska. We're a robust, open-to-the-public makerspace and we operate the ONLY mobile makerspace in the region, but above all that we exist to help foster and underserved youth find success. Through our spaces, innovative programming, and caring mentors, we drastically improve the odds of success for the youth we support.

Our AWESOME Welding instructor Leah is back in the shop today, battling the heat and teaching a group of teens how to weld. This is one of many opportunities we're making available for youth in our programming this summer. Welding is one of the most in-demand skilled trades out there, and students who complete this course will be one step closer to having skills they need for a successful life.

Thank you to everyone who supports our mission to make opportunities like this possible! We couldn't do it without you!

When people ask me what I like least about my job, I always know the answer: I hate that I can't take more pictures.

Today was an AWESOME day! Our friends at Girls Inc of Omaha brought over a squad of kindergarteners to make straw rockets and become miniature "rocket scientists." It was an absolute blast, and I'd be lying to you if I said these weren't the sweetest group of kids ever. They were so fun, and so well-mannered!

Of course, protecting kids' privacy is a foundational piece of who we are, so when we do many of our events, especially those with youth from other organizations, we don't take pictures of the kids. It's definitely the right thing to do, but it makes telling the story of our organization harder. Every year, we work with hundreds of awesome, incredible kids that you'll never see. But they're here, learning STEM and trade skills and being equipped for their success.

Thank you to everyone who chooses to support us. We might not be able to send you a picture of every kid whose life we touch, but we're out here every day, touching lives, and we couldn't do it without your support.

Today we've got a group of youth coming in who will make up our summer work crew. This group is through a partnership with Nebraska Vocational Rehab, which allows these youth to earn a paycheck while learning our STRONG Life Skills and helping us keep the makerspace in good shape. It's a great program that teaches kids skills they need for success, which is what we're all about!

Everything left from our merger with Omaha Maker Group will be going to auction in a few weeks. Here's a sneak peek of what you could find if you come to the auction.

This morning was awesome. I got to meet up with some truly incredible community leaders and serve on the panel of judges who determined the winners for this year's Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands awards ceremony. It was such an honor to be part of the team!

We've got a laptop shortage! Can you help us?

Every year, Made New Makerspace gives away hundreds of refurbished laptops to kids from low-income families. Due to rising tech prices along with a variety of other factors, we are critically low on laptops, so much so that we have temporarily suspended accepting laptop applications. With summer school fast approaching, this is a pretty terrible time to run out of machines.

We could really use your help. If you have a good-running Windows 11 laptop that isn't being used, please consider donating it to Made New Makerspace. Or even better, if you run a business that has piles of functional laptops that are taking up space, let us take them!

The easiest way to get laptops to us is to bring them to our friends at Ken's PC Repair Omaha off 138th and Q (IMPORTANT: Be sure to tell them the laptop is for Made New Makerspace when dropping it off). Ken's shop makes sure any old data is erased and a fresh copy of Windows is installed.

You can also bring the laptops directly to our facility. If you go this route, reach out to me at [email protected] in advance to confirm that your drop-off time works.

If you don't have a laptop to donate, but want to support this critical work, consider making a donation at https://madenewomaha.com/donate to help us cover the costs associated with this program.

Thank you for your support. With your help, we can get technology into the hands of young people who need it most.

This week is National Recurring Donor Week, and I wanted to highlight the amazing things we can do here at Made New because of our awesome monthly donors.

First, there's our laptop program, Laptops for Learners, which connects hundreds of kids from low-income homes with free refurbished laptops every year. For many of these kids (like our friends in the Suhail family in the photo), this gift helps them complete their education and opens pathways to success.

Then, there are awesome collaborations with organizations like Partnership 4 Hope or Nebraska Vocational Rehab, where we help young people learn the skills they need to be successful in the workforce.

And of course, there are other programs, such as our classes and workshops, where we teach STEM and trade skills to the community, or our Mobile Makerspace, where we take what we do out into the community.

At the end of the day, it takes approximately $6000 a month to keep our organization afloat. Monthly donors are a big part of why we've been able to serve Omaha for the last 8+ years, and with your help, we'll keep going.

If you're not a monthly donor, there's no better time to become one! A $10 monthly gift will enable us to give one more local youth a refurbished computer this year. A $25 monthly gift will enroll a student in one of our high-demand classes like welding. The more you give, the more of an impact you have in our community. Give today at https://madenewomaha.com/give-monthly/ and join us in making a difference!

It's our Christmas miracle! We literally promised out our last working laptop on hand this morning. Then this afternoon, one of my good friends and his kids rolled in the front door with this! Nearly 50 more laptops! We'll be refurbishing these and getting them into the hands of kids in need very soon!
