🚒 Próximamente en una esquina cerca de ti. Ayúdanos a llenar la bota esta temporada en nombre de la MDA.
🥾 Coming soon to a street corner near you. Help us fill the boot this season on behalf of MDA.
After more than a decade of not being able to “Fill the Boot” on Omaha streets, an ordinance to get Omaha fire fighters back out collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association is on the Omaha City Council agenda!! We could not be more thankful to Omaha City Councilman Begley for this ordinance, which will allow us to once again help some of the most vulnerable citizens from our community and all around the country!!
For those unfamiliar, Omaha Firefighters have a long history of “Filling the Boot” for MDA but in 2012 we were banned from collecting for MDA on city streets/intersection. Since then, we’ve continued to raise money for MDA from smaller events, and a scaled-down weekend collecting donations in boots in front of local grocery stores – more than a million dollars just from Omaha fire fighters since then – but we’ve been raising much less annually than we were when our firefighters were collecting at the intersections.
Now, with this ordinance, that can all change! As always, our members receive absolutely nothing in return for this work for MDA – it’s just a passion that has been aligned with our membership and our profession since the 1950s! It all started in South Boston, when a man whose two sons had neuromuscular diseases came to the fire station looking for assistance. That fire fighter and his crew went around collecting money from the community to present to the man for assistance, but afterwards, found out that there were far more children impacted across both his city and the country. They pushed the issue through the IAFF, and fire fighters took the charge, starting a 70-plus-year partnership that has absolutely impacted the fight against neuromuscular diseases.
We could not be more touched to be so close to returning to our previous levels of impact for kids from Omaha and all over the country suffering from neuromuscular diseases!! Our members thank you, but more importantly, kids and their families suffering from muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases thank you!
Stay safe, Omaha, and we hope to see you back out on the corners this upcoming Labor Day!!
