Twenty-five years later, we remember.

We remember those whose lives were lost and the families, first responders, and communities forever changed by September 11, 2001.

We remember the people who came together in the aftermath, serving, comforting, praying, and caring for one another in a time of unimaginable loss.

Today, we honor those we lost, give thanks to those who served, and continue to carry forward that spirit of compassion, unity, and service.

We remember. We honor. We never forget.

Twenty-five years ago, Salvation Army responder Ken Tregellas left his family in Wisconsin and flew to New York to serve at Ground Zero.

As The Salvation Army’s Red Zone coordinator, he spent months caring for recovery workers and families searching for answers about their loved ones. He provided meals and places to rest, but also listened, offered prayer and helped people carry the weight of unimaginable loss.

Years later, Ken was diagnosed with cancer connected to his exposure at Ground Zero. When his children asked if he would make the same decision knowing the risks, his answer was simple: “I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It was an honor.”

Read Ken’s story and learn why he continues to share his experience 25 years later: https://www.foxnews.com/us/salvation-army-responder-opens-9-11-cancer-battle-phone-call-changed-life

As we continue the Heartland Honors 9/11 11 Days of Service, we're highlighting Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services and its long history of serving communities in times of crisis, including in the aftermath of 9/11, when EDS volunteers provided meals, care, and support to first responders and those affected.

Today, EDS continues that same mission, responding to disasters and supporting local emergency and community events throughout the year.

You don't need prior disaster experience to get involved. Whether you're brand new to EDS or have experience in disaster response, there's a place for you on the team.

Interested in getting started? Take our online EDS intro course here: https://x.gldn.io/e/1l9LYot895b or you can reach out to our team at [email protected]
