Omaha's streets weren't always built for cars and they don't have to stay that way.

Our Executive Director Julie Harris was featured in Flatwater Free Press this week, weighing in on Omaha's streetcar debate and what it really means for the future of walking and biking in our city.

Whether you're behind the wheel, on a bike, or on foot, Nebraska's streets belong to all of us. Last year, Nebraska saw a 33% increase in fatal vulnerable road user crashes and an 82% more fatalities than the five-year average.

Today we're launching Watch for Wheels, a statewide campaign to remind every road user that safety is a shared responsibility. When we all do our part, everyone gets home safely.

Take the pledge to stay alert, follow the rules of the road, and watch for everyone who shares Nebraska's streets and trails. Share this with someone who needs to see it.

Bike Walk Nebraska is leading the first phase of a statewide study exploring the economic impact of trail use, the impact of trails on community health, and an analysis of trail funding sources across Nebraska.

We're seeking input from trail users, businesses that benefit from trail infrastructure, organizations that support public trails, and local government representatives who manage trail building and maintenance programs.

Your opinion shapes the future of trail infrastructure statewide.
Survey closes June 21st. Take the survey: https://www.bikewalknebraska.org/what-we-do/2026-economic-and-health-impact-of-trails-study.html

Creating safer streets starts with awareness and shared responsibility. Small actions behind the wheel like slowing down and staying alert, can make a significant difference in preventing serious crashes.

Nebraska's "Move Over, Slow Down" law reinforces the importance of using caution when approaching or passing vulnerable road users, including pedestrians. The VRU law includes:

🚲 Increased judicial options for judges to consider when sentencing drivers involved in serious injury or fatal vulnerable road user crashes
🚲 Increased fines for speeding
🚲 Upgraded 3-foot passing law requiring drivers to change lanes to pass when possible

As e-bikes become more common, understanding how they are defined is an important part of creating clarity and consistency across Nebraska.

The three-class system helps distinguish how different e-bikes operate, which supports safer interactions between users and helps guide policy decisions about where and how they can be used.

We need at least 5 more volunteers to help us conduct trail counts in Omaha!

Bike Walk Nebraska is studying the concerns around the growth of enhanced e-bikes or e-motos on our trails. Manual trail counts help us identify potential issues and determine the best path forward, whether that's through infrastructure, policy, or both. Volunteers will receive a training video and instruction sheet. No experience is needed.
