A sump pump is basically a small water-removal pump for your basement.

It sits in a pit (called a sump pit) at the lowest part of the basement or crawl space. When groundwater or rainwater collects around the foundation and flows into that pit:

Water comes in → pit fills → pump turns on → water gets pumped outside and away from the house.

Think of it like a backup drain for your basement. Instead of letting water rise onto the basement floor, the sump pump catches and removes it.

One important distinction: a sump pump doesn’t stop water from reaching your house. It removes water once it collects. That’s why things like good grading, gutters/downspouts, and French drains can work with a sump pump.
