There's so much information! How do we know what's real?

Our very own Emma Kate Thome, PhD, CCC-SLP of the Emerging Language Knowledge Lab sat down with Speech Pathology Australia to discuss what pseudoscience is and why it's so appealing.

A new episode of is out now.

Pseudoscientific approaches can be surprisingly appealing, even in a profession grounded in evidence-based practice.
In this week’s episode, we speak with Dr Emma Kate Thome from Boys Town National Research Hospital (USA) about how to identify and manage pseudoscientific practices in speech pathology.

Dr Thome explores:
• what pseudoscience looks like in practice
• why it can appeal to both clinicians and the people they support
• the risks it poses to safe, effective and evidence-based care.

This episode offers valuable insights for speech pathologists looking to strengthen their critical thinking and clinical decision-making.

Happy World Book Day! 📚✨

Books do more than teach children facts. They help them feel understood. The right story can be a mirror, showing kids they’re not alone, or a window, helping them understand the world and the people around them.

Celebrate by sharing a story that has helped you, your child, or your students feel seen. 💙

Not all tests are created equal. Hope Lancaster, Ph. D., and her team are out to prove out.

New research from Hope Lancaster, Ph.D., and her team at the Etiologies of Language and Literacy Lab shows that not all nonverbal IQ tests measure children in the same way. For kids with ADHD or language disorders, a test that relies heavily on attention or language may not reflect what they truly know.

These tests can influence big decisions, including learning disability diagnoses and access to services. Choosing the right test helps give children a fair and accurate picture of their strengths.

Dr. Lancaster’s study — the first of its kind — is sparking new conversations about how we measure children’s abilities and how to make testing more equitable for every child.
