OMAWA was honored to welcome 2x Nebraska State Champion, former Husker athlete, and longtime wrestling official Pernell Gatson as the keynote speaker for our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration Dinner!

Pernell shared powerful stories from his journey... his beginnings at the Wesley House to competing at the highest levels and giving back on the mat today. His message resonated deeply with our coaches, volunteers, and families:

• The True Impact of a Volunteer: For the 2–3 hours our athletes are at practice, coaches and volunteers have a lifelong impact. You are not just teaching technique, you’re providing stability, encouragement, and a safe space when kids need it most.

• Being in the Moment: Whether it’s celebrating a tough win, offering a hug after a loss, or teaching resilience, volunteers show up during the moments that shape young lives.

• A Heartfelt Thank-You to Our Families: A special shout-out went out to the spouses and families who sacrifice their evenings and weekends, supporting the volunteers who dedicate their time to our youth.

Pernell reminded us that sports are a vehicle for building character and community. Decades after his own championships, seeing him still on the mat giving 100% to today’s young wrestlers is proof of the lasting power of giving back.

Thank you, Pernell, for inspiring us, sharing your championship rings and memories, and continuing to serve the Nebraska wrestling community!

OMAWA is looking to fill 2 open spots on the OMAWA Dual Team for Huskerland (3rd–5th Grade)!

✅ We still need wrestlers at: 100 lbs and 130 lbs (2 of 13 weight classes still open)

🗓️ Tournament Date: Sunday, March 15, 2026
🏟️ Team Limit: 32 teams

⏰ Weigh-ins: Begin at 7:00 a.m.

All team members must weigh in together — no exceptions

2-pound allowance for all wrestlers

Following the NFHS Rules Book

🤼 Wrestling Starts: 8:00 a.m.
⚖️ Weight Classes: 13 total

📝 Interest Survey Deadline: Saturday, March 7, 2026 before 7:00 p.m.
💰 Dual team fees are paid for by OMAWA.

🚨 The Growth Is Real. And We’re Watching It Happen. 🚨

2026 marks the fifth year girls wrestling has been officially sanctioned in Nebraska and the numbers tell the story.

🔹 896 boys and 🔹448 girls qualified for the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships this year.

That doesn’t happen by accident.

It starts right here at events like the OMAWA Duals.

Coach Cameron from Fremont Wrestling Club said it best:
“More mat time equals wins.”
“Wrestling builds confidence — in every area of life.”
And that’s exactly what we’re seeing.

The more opportunities girls (& boys) get at the youth level…
The more teams we build…
The more dual competition we create…
