Bluebird Cultural Initiative Revitalizing the past. Energizing the Future. Workshops include drums, regalia, featherwork, beadwork, brain tanning hides and tipi painting.

Bluebird Cultural Initiative offers educational lectures, performances, and workshops on a variety of topics, lectures on art, history and culture. Steve Tamayo, a Sicangu Lakota, is a traditional artist who has been involved in powwows for 30 years. He holds a BFA in fine arts from Sinte Gleska University in Mission, SD, on the Rosebud Reservation. He lives and works in Omaha, NE. It's been a busy last week at Bluebird so here is our past week in a recap: UNMC STEAM night, team building games, Every Child Matters Walk for Remembrance and Justice followed by a community lunch, Buffalo harvest at Fort Atkinson, Dance performance at Fort Atkinson, Panel discussion at Film Streams and Open sewing/traditional arts session last night

Last night we were able to share the experience of making sweet grass braids with some of our young relatives and community members.

Native Dance & Fitness Class for this evening will be cancelled. As the weather is scheduled to continue in severity this evening we want to keep our staff and participants safe and out of the severe weather.

A word from the instructor:
Dance class is canceled for tonight due to the weather rolling in, I’m still asking all my students to throw on atleast one straight song and one change up! get that cardio in, practice that footwork,, and learn those songs! Hope you all have a cozy and safe night🫶🏼

*** Event UPDATE: We want to be mindful of all our relatives and any obstacles rain may cause while also remembering weather never stopped us from walking when we felt compelled to before. The plan is to walk to the top of the bridge and back from the Omaha side beginning promptly at 12pm. All are welcome to gather at NUIHC (2226 N Street) with doors opening at 12:30pm for a prayer and pot luck lunch. We hope to see you there!

We had the privilege to facilitate a GONA (Gathering of Native Americans) for the Ponca Tribe of NE this weekend. As always it is amazing to spend time and space with our young community relatives as they grow in their sense of belonging, cultural knowledge, community, prevention skills and understanding their identity. Grateful to have our local DEA educator to share her knowledge and time with us as well.

My travels have landed me at the
Mah Kan To Oskate in Mankato, Minnesota this week. I’ve been asked to come back year after year to teach and explain our beautiful Indigenous way of being to the students of Mankato Minnesota .
From the Middle schoolers to their college level students for their in-service learning projects. Twas a good time to be had by all I must say.

The rain was something else here but that never seems to bothers them here!!!!! Unlike other places hehehehehehe!!!! The grounds are definitely tore up though, I’ll say that much. Be safe and stay warm my peeps!!!!!
