The Omaha Parks Foundation aims to provide destinations – some exciting, some peaceful - that encourage wellness and a healthy lifestyle, lifting the spirits of all Omahans. We strive to beautify the city, making it vibrant and attractive to potential residents and companies looking to relocate. Our role is to improve facilities and expand programming to establish Omaha’s parks as a model for the

rest of the country. By encouraging philanthropic support and investment in a valued community resource, the Omaha Parks Foundation will facilitate the future of the city’s parks system, offering citizens the opportunity to leave a legacy for generations to come.

If Benson Park could talk, it would tell you about its steady stream of visitors and families celebrating at the park on summer weekends! 🌳 Benson Park was established in 1931 on land that was previously the fruit farm of renowned horticulturist Theodore Williams.

Here’s a list of the amenities at Benson Park:
- Basketball courts
- Tennis courts
- Paved paths 
- Lake populated with ducks, geese, turtles, and fish
- Fishing dock
- Expansive picnic area with grills
- Inclusive playground with rubber safety padding, double ramps, and accessible swings
- Large sprayground with a shade canopy
- 18-hole public golf course
- Pavilion available for rental year round
- 217 acres of green space with mature trees

This historic picture features the putting green at Elmwood’s HOLE 2 on September 18, 1921 — the very same date as our 2026 event!!! (9/18/1921. From the KMTV/Bostwich Frohardt Photograph Collection, permanently housed at The Durham Museum.)

110 YEARS OF ELMWOOD GOLF COURSE! ⛳️ To celebrate this milestone, we are sharing our THEN & NOW photo series and celebrating with Tee it Up FORE Omaha Parks! this September.

This historic course map from 1915 originally placed the first hole next to the Elmwood Park Pavilion that’s been used since 1909. (1915, Omaha Daily News) The original Elmwood Park Golf Course layout was designed in 1916 by Charles Johnson of the Happy Hollow Club and C.H. English, Omaha’s Recreation and Play Supervisor.

“Always presenting the most beautiful natural hazards, old Elmwood park, with its acres and acres of fine big trees, ravines, undergrowth, hills and valleys, has been converted into a links that is nearly perfect — so nearly perfect, in fact, that even the most skilled player will find difficulties which will tax him to the utmost to overcome.” Sunday World Herald, December 2, 1915

110 YEARS OF ELMWOOD GOLF COURSE! ⛳️ To celebrate this milestone, we are sharing our THEN & NOW photo series and celebrating with Tee it Up FORE Omaha Parks! this September.

In 1915, Omaha Parks Commissioner Joseph Hummel recognized the potential for a new 18-hole municipal course to offer an alternative to 9-hole Miller Park Golf Course, founded in 1911. As Elmwood Golf Course opened in 1916, they had 70 members and predicted they would expand to 200 by 1917.

Today we held a ribbon cutting ceremony at historic Kountze Park in celebration of the recent renovations! 🌳

The improvements include:
• Brand new sprayground and playground
• Six newly renovated courts including two tennis courts and four pickleball courts
• New tables, benches, walkways, and shade structures
• New trees

In attendance were Mayor John Ewing, Jr., Councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin, Kountze neighbors and friends, Omaha Parks Foundation board and staff, and Omaha Parks & Recreation staff.

The upgrades look TERRIFIC and are bringing LOTS of activity to the park! Keep following along as we share the park in use.
