Goodfellows Omaha

Goodfellows Omaha Goodfellows, established in the 1890s, helps those in our community who have fallen on hard times. In 1910, The World-Herald renamed its charity Goodfellows.

The Omaha World-Herald's charitable involvement dates back to the 1890s, when the generosity of readers helped area farmers overcome bad crops and widespread unemployment. The "Tow Line," as it was known, became a symbol the newspaper used to stir public opinion and build support for a charity or an issue. The program began as an effort to match 750 needy children with families who promised to pro

vide them with a decent Christmas. In 1945, World-Herald Goodfellows Charities, Inc. was chartered as a nonprofit charitable corporation. United Way of the Midlands is honored to partner with the Omaha World-Herald to administer the Goodfellows program. Goodfellows assistance is diverse. First, year-round emergency funds are available to families with one-time urgent needs that cannot be met by any other public or private assistance. Second, holiday meals are provided to nearly 5,000 families and their children referred by area social service agencies. Lastly, Goodfellows provides funds for clothing shoes and coats for thousands of underprivileged children.

Goodfellows holiday meal vouchers, providing $50 or $100 gift cards to Bakers, help Omaha-area families address food insecurity with dignity. Administered by United Way of the Midlands in partnership with Omaha World-Herald, the program has supported families for over 130 years. Beneficiaries like Jeri Janz, now volunteer coordinator at Together, recall the relief and empowerment of choosing groceries their families would enjoy during tough times. With 35% of Omaha families facing food insecurity, these vouchers offer more than food β€” they provide hope and respect.

Our Story

The Omaha World-Herald's charitable involvement dates back to the 1890's, when poor crops and high unemployment left many Nebraskans short of food, fuel and clothing. In 1894, the World-Herald asked readers to "Throw Out the Towline" to help those in our community who needed it the most.

The "towline" continued until 1910, when it was renamed Goodfellows. In 1945, the program was converted to a nonprofit charitable corporation and we began tracking donations. Since then we have raised and distributed over $15 million to our community.

Most importantly, because the World-Herald covers all administrative costs, 100% of the money donated goes directly to those in need.

Goodfellows provides year-round emergency assistance with one-time urgent needs that cannot be met by any other public or private agency.
