Today we wrapped up the 2026 Nebraska State FOP Conference. I want to thank the delegates for re-electing me to the Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge. It is an honor to continue serving and advocating for our members at the local, state, and national levels. Also, congrats to all of our newly elected state board members!

Thank you to my local lodge, Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #2, for the continued support and for being at the conference. I’m proud to represent all of you.

Thank you also to US Senator Pete Ricketts for joining us and for his continued support of law enforcement and corrections.

The work continues. FOP strong!

During my officer report at the Nebraska State FOP Conference today I spoke about several topics, including the recent critical incidents and officer involved shootings in the Omaha metro area.

Two of those incidents resulted in Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #2 members being shot in the line of duty just a few weeks apart. Those incidents are a stark reminder of the importance of training and how attacks on law enforcement officers are trending up both nationally and in Nebraska.

Had the pleasure of meeting “Ponch” (Erik Estrada) from the tv show CHiPs at the National Sheriffs' Association National Conference in Omaha today.

My agency, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (NE), is the host agency for the conference this year. Hats off to all of our deputies who have been amazing hosts this week.

So let me get this straight...

Homeless people can stand in medians and intersections panhandling money from the public every day to support their drug and alcohol addictions, but Omaha firefighters can't raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association?

A city that claims to support community involvement should be encouraging charitable fundraising by its firefighters, not standing in the way of it.

Omaha Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF L385

Yesterday, the Omaha City Council rejected an ordinance that would have allowed our firefighters – with approval of both the mayor and department head – to once again collect on the streets for MDA. For the inevitable follow-up question, those voting against our ordinance were Brinker Harding, LaVonya Goodwin, and Don Rowe. Aimee Melton was absent

We’re disappointed, but ultimately, the only ones this vote hurt were the Muscular Dystrophy Association and all the people with neuromuscular diseases that these efforts would have supported. Before being taken off the streets for what many believe was purely political retribution, our union alone was regularly bringing in over $100,000 each year for MDA while collecting for a couple of hours over Labor Day weekend– all while receiving absolutely nothing in return. After we were taken off the streets, these donations dwindled, despite our attempts to host regular events and “Fill the Boot” drives in front of grocery stores.

We’re altruistic people, and we want to help as many people as we can – whether it’s an emergency a person is experiencing or a life-long battle against a neuromuscular disease – but with these politicians’ “NO” vote, the only thing being accomplished is negatively impacting those in our community fighting muscular dystrophy. Our fire fighters will continue to respond to emergencies, raise a modest amount of money for MDA off-duty, and do what we can for the organization, and it won’t impact our day-to-day much. But for those with neuromuscular diseases, this is a tremendous opportunity that was lost and is a major blow. It’s frustrating when the general public sees politics interfere with doing the right thing, and after fighting so hard for others with this ordinance, we can completely understand that frustration.

Stay safe, Omaha!

Well done, Omaha Storm Chasers! 👏👏

Thankful all of our brothers and sisters at the Omaha Police Department and Omaha Police Officers Association are safe. 🙏🙏

Omaha police officers shot and killed a man in South Omaha Tuesday after he opened fire on them, according to the Omaha Police Department.

Police responded to the 2700 block of South 19th Street about 8:42 a.m. for a 911 call regarding a disturbance, Chief Todd Schmaderer said. The man, who lived at the address but was being evicted, was “highly agitated,” Schmaderer said.

Officers removed everyone else from the house and attempted to negotiate with the man, who made statements about having a high-capacity rifle and being ready to “shoot it out” with the SWAT team, Schmaderer said.

The man later appeared at an upstairs window with a rifle and began shooting at officers, who returned fire, killing him, police said.
