WHY WE WEAR RED

In 1989, along with many of our Union brothers and sisters across the country, CWA was on strike against Bell Atlantic. This strike was successful, providing the language which assured us all the work in the outside plant associated with the fiber network. It was a long, 18-day strike, but we stood strong, and we still enjoy many of the protections that we achieved during that strike. The Company looks at a strike as business as usual, and in a very impersonal manner, but this is our livelihood, and it affects us; not just us, but our families as well. A strike is never easy, and it is always our last resort to protect our future.

One of our members walking the picket line was E. Gerald Hogan, Chief Steward, CWA Local 1103. On August 15, 1989, a Thursday morning, Gerry Hogan was killed. His death was a result from injuries he sustained when he was run down by a “scab” as he walked picket duty. The driver of the vehicle which killed him was a manager’s daughter, who was working as a “scab” during the strike.

In the CWA’s long storied history, he is the only member to be killed on a picket line.

The idea started small; we asked all of our members to wear red on Thursdays to remind the Company of the blood they had spilled, and to show support for our fallen brother, and it quickly spread nationwide as a sign of solidarity. Wearing red is a simple, but effective way to show the Company that we stand together as a Union. We all have personal lives and beliefs, but in the workplace, every member needs to share the same goals: better wages, benefits, job security, and respect in the workplace.

No company that we represent can take away the wages and benefits that we have fought so hard to achieve when we stand together. Our solidarity will make these companies prosperous and provide good jobs for generations to come, but only when we stand united.

SOLIDARITY IS NOT JUST AN IDEA. IT IS A BELIEF THAT, TOGETHER, WE CAN PROTECT AND IMPROVE OUR WAY OF LIFE.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WEAR RED EVERY THURSDAY!

Lumen Early Bargaining: Report #3
June 29, 2022

To kick off today’s bargaining, the Lumen Bargaining Committee walked in united, making a large ruckus using noise makers. We can’t let corporate greed continue to negatively impact our lives. Only collectively can we change the status quo, and sometimes that requires making a little noise. Needless to say, the company took notice.

We covered the bargaining proposals that addressed the union's priorities items of job security and wages.

In the field, Local 7200 members made some noise of their own fighting for a just a fair contract. Meanwhile more selfies keep coming in and we are almost at 1,000 pledge cards. Follow us on Facebook here: D7 page to see video and more pics.

Tomorrow is the Red Revolution. Wear red, change your Teams background to red and correspond in red/bold font.

Lumen Early Bargaining: Report #2
June 28, 2022

As early bargaining continues, the union and the company are having meaningful conversations in regards to our respective priorities. Proposals have been exchanged and our Lumen Bargaining Committee remains steadfast in our fight for a fair contract at Lumen.

Throughout the D7, CWA members have been taking selfies, pledging yes for a fair contract and mobilizing their coworkers. To date we are 935 I’m All In For A Fair Contract pledge cards strong, which is 20% of our membership. Imagine how much more power we can build when we stand together against corporate greed.

Tomorrow make some noise for a fair contract - honk your horn when leaving the yard or tap/click your pens or even blow a kazoo or whistle at work.
