Join Dr. Jeanne Stolzer for:

“An Examination of S*x Differences and Implications for Sign Language Interpreting: A Biocultural Analysis”

How might biological s*x differences influence cognitive processing, communication, nonverbal cues, and ultimately the interpreting process?

Dr. Stolzer’s session will examine research surrounding biological differences between males and females and explore what those differences may mean within sign language interpreting, where visual/spatial processing, facial grammar, body language, and nonverbal communication play an important role.

The presentation will explore topics including brain differences, hormonal and psychological variance, nonverbal communication, cognitive and linguistic processing, and how these factors may influence interpreting practices.

Dr. Jeanne Stolzer is a Professor of Family Science at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a prolific researcher who has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles over the past 25 years. Her research interests span human development, attachment theory, bioevolutionary theory, and other areas related to child and family science.

In this session, Dr. Maddox will explore the importance of professionalizing language access in educational settings and the impact qualified interpreters can have on school-home collaboration.

Participants will learn about national certification for educational interpreters, including steps toward certification, language proficiency requirements, professional development pathways, and resources that can help families advocate for qualified language support.

Because equitable access in our schools requires more than simply speaking two languages—it requires trained professionals, clear standards, and a commitment to meaningful communication.
