The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Transitions Program is a peer-mediated social learning prog

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Transitions Program is a peer-mediated social learning program facilitated by UNO Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders speech-language pathology graduate students at the UNO Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center. The mission of the UNO Transitions Program is to provide social opportunities for young adults, ages 18-25 (post high

school), who identify on the autism spectrum. The program is designed for folks who are fluently verbal and socially motivated to practice and refine language and communication, with a focus on social competencies. Members of the UNO chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA)/Collegiate Sertoma serve as peer volunteers.

Everyone deserves a space where they feel seen, respected, and free to connect in their own way.

Our program offers neurodiversity-affirming social opportunities designed with flexibility at the core. Whether someone prefers structured activities, shared interests, or simply being in a welcoming environment, participation is always valid.

There’s no pressure to “fit in” or perform a certain way here. Instead, we celebrate individuality, honor different communication styles, and create opportunities for authentic connection, regardless of interests, energy levels, or social preferences.

Because belonging shouldn’t depend on changing who you are.

This month is about more than awareness. It's about acceptance, respect, and celebrating the diversity within the autistic community. For adults on the spectrum, it’s also a time to honor lived experiences, strengths, challenges, and the unique perspectives that shape who we are.

Whether you were diagnosed recently or have been navigating life on the spectrum for years, your voice matters. Your experiences are valid. And you deserve spaces where you can be fully yourself, without masking, without judgment.

Let’s use this month to:
♾️ Share our stories (if we choose to)
♾️ Support one another
♾️ Advocate for inclusion in workplaces, relationships, and communities
♾️ Celebrate neurodiversity in all its forms

In the UNO Transitions Program, we practice seeing the world from different angles.

Perspective taking isn’t always easy, so we build it together. Through shared activities, open conversations, and moments of curiosity, we explore how the same situation can look and feel completely different depending on where you’re standing.

This photo captures a unique point of view. Just like in our group, there’s no single “right” way to see things, only opportunities to understand each other better.

For young autistic adults, social dance can support communication competencies in ways that feel natural, structured, and enjoyable. Through rhythm, shared space, and partner interaction guided by WhyArts Inc., we practice key skills like turn-taking, reading nonverbal cues, initiating interaction, and responding to others in real time.

The predictability of patterns and music also creates a supportive environment where we can feel safe to explore connection at our own pace. Most importantly, social dance fosters a sense of belonging. It’s not about perfection; it’s about participation, expression, and shared joy.
