The Elmwood Park Neighborhood is a beautifully nestled sanctuary of homes adjacent to Elmwood Park and nearby quaint midtown shops and eateries including a newly opened theatre. It is located in Midtown Omaha, Nebraska. The neighborhood extends between 72nd Street west to 50th Street east and beautifully landscaped Dodge Street to Pacific, north and south. The neighborhood is a historically signif

icant area that was developed in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Elmwood Park neighborhood currently consists of approximately 500 households with homes in the area reflecting the Colonial, Georgian and Tudor Revival styles. Omaha annexed Elmwood Park and the surrounding neighborhoods on April 24, 1917. Today the neighborhood’s park hosts the city’s “Shakespeare on the Green” festival. The neighborhood encompasses Elmwood Park and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Students are within walking distance of the campus. Park activities flourish all season long with sledding and cross country skiing in winter, walking and biking trails as well as golfing. The park is over 200 acres and was originally named after the elegant trees contained within.

Mid Century home style is the affordable trendy home style that seems to be appealing to younger audiences.

Marty Hosking sells Mid Century homes. Marty is also very community and neighborhood connected. He hosts home tours and gatherings and has remodeled and preserved older homes rather than see them demolished.

He asked if I would share this with Elmwood Park neighborhoods. This home is in Fairacres. All Elmwood Park neighborhood residents are invited.

Please note: The date is wrong on the flyer. The preview is this Sunday, April 19th. at noon to 1 pm.

Hello Neighbors!
A number of midtown neighborhood leaders/presidents will be testifying at the Mega Saver liquor license hearing on July 16th at 2 pm in the Legislative Chamber. We are currently continuing to strategize.
We will be attempting to block Mega Saver slated for 71st & Dodge from obtaining a liquor license. Other organizations will also testify along side us. Talk points will include MS liquor violations as related to sales to minors and nearby UNO, Lewis & Clark School and St. Margaret Mary’s School and others, the driveway regulation ordinance, Dodge St. being an area of civic importance, the new library across the street and more. We are asking for full denial of the liquor license but will also ask that liquor sales be kept above 32 ounces so as to not allow for shot bottles and easy alcohol access if the license is approved. We’ve met with council member Danny Begley several times as well as Public Works, City Planning and a Mega Saver representative.
Please join us at the hearing if you’d like to support opposing the Mega Saver at 71st & Dodge Street. You may also email a letter of opposition to each council member. Emails can be found at http://citycouncil.cityofomaha.org.

Free Shade Trees! What On Earth?

Clair Memorial Church and American Reforestation Initiative invite all homeowners to plant a tree for Earth Day!

Pick up your FREE shade tree at 5544 Ames Ave on Saturday, April 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Trees clean our air and water, provide habitat for wildlife, connect communities, and support our health and well-being.

These shade trees are distributed by the Clair Memorial Church and the American Reforestation Initiative, and funded by grants through the Arbor Day Foundation and funding by First National Bank of Omaha.

Important Information:

Limited Stock – Only the first 100 reservations will receive a shade tree.

Drive-Thru – Pick up your tree in a vehicle with space to hold a 5-7-foot-tall tree in a 7-gallon container. Trees and containers can be laid gently on their side during transport. Staff and volunteers will load trees into your vehicle.

Tree species include Autumn Blaze, cactalpa and Princeton Elm among others.
Planting Your Tree:

Step 1. Right tree, right place.
Call 811 at least two days prior to planting your tree. Proper tree selection based on available space is important for tree health and management. Proper tree selection and placement can enhance property value and prevent potential maintenance damage to your property and surrounding utilities.

Step 2. Check your soil.
If too wet, wait for soil to dry out a bit before digging. Soil should be just moist enough to crumble.

Step 3. Dig.
Dig the hole no deeper than the root ball container depth and dig your hole twice as wide as the container width. This helps new roots establish more quickly to let the tree stand at the same level as the surrounding existing soil. The root flare, or bottom of the trunk, should be slightly higher than the surrounding existing soil level.

Step 4. Root preparation.
Slide tree out of the container and untangle roots if they are tightly tangled together. Loosen large roots and tease out smaller ones. The goal is to encourage roots to grow horizontally into the surrounding existing soil.

Step 5. Fill around tree.
Use a rake or small shovel to add soil back to the hole once tree is placed in the center of the hole. Check the root flare to make sure it is at the proper height at ground level. Begin to fill hole and slowly work soil around edges of the root ball. Continue filling until hole is level with the surrounding existing soil and above the root ball.

Step 6. Mulch.
Spread a 2-inch layer of wood chips over the bare ground and root ball leaving a few inches of space around the root flare. Mulching your tree with wood chips or other organic matter helps the tree hold moisture, moderates soil temperature extremes and reduces grass and w**d competition.

Step 7. Stake.
Trees should be staked for at least one year to gain stability but is not necessary. Use soft material or padded wire where the support touches the trunk.

Step 8. Water.
Your new tree has been planted and still needs watered in the Winter months, but not as much as if it were planted in the Spring. Trees need water especially when it has been windy or if there have been drought-like conditions. Make sure to monitor weather conditions and keep an eye on your tree health. Slowly soak the ground beneath the tree. Plan on 1 gallon per week per square foot spread of the roots.
