Everyone knows Snoopy. Not everyone knows the Latino creative who helped give him life.
As the holiday season rolls in, Latino Professionals® is taking a moment to spotlight a trailblazer whose influence still ripples across animation: José Cuauhtémoc “Bill” Meléndez — born November 15, 1916, and one of the most impactful animators, directors, and voice talents of his time.
Bill Meléndez brought more than skill to the craft.
He brought heart.
He brought culture.
He brought a way of working that blended discipline with quiet brilliance.
After moving from Sonora, Mexico to the United States, he joined Walt Disney Studios and left his mark on classics like Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, and Dumbo. His animation carried emotion — not just movement. It was storytelling through sincerity.
And when it came to Peanuts, Bill became the only person Charles Schulz trusted to animate Snoopy. For decades, the sound, personality, and charm of that famous beagle came from a Latino artist who believed that true excellence isn’t loud — it’s consistent, intentional, and built to last.
For our community, Bill stands as a reminder that representation didn’t start with modern conversations.
It started with individuals like him — carving space, elevating the work, and reshaping an industry from the inside.
Here’s to honoring the creative minds who paved the way.
Here’s to Bill Meléndez — a legacy worth lifting.
