So far, Opportunity Campus has helped house 5 residents, supported 12 young people into employment, provided 17 emergency hotel stays, and served more than 8,000 meals.

Behind every one of those numbers is a person who needed support, and a moment when being able to access that support mattered.

And we want to keep going.

Our Opportunity Forward campaign is raising $10,000 to help keep meals, emergency assistance, housing support, resources, and opportunities available for the people who come through our doors.

We are grieving the loss of Grace Detrevarah, a beloved Black trans elder whose courage and care meant so much to our community. It hurts to say goodbye to someone who spent so much of her life helping our people find support, speak up for themselves, and move forward.

Grace fought for the dignity of trans people in prisons and jails, challenged HIV stigma, and supported LGBTQIA+ people returning home from incarceration. Through her work at the Osborne Association, she helped build a program where people could bring their needs, their stories, and their whole selves. That work mattered in people’s everyday lives.

Our love is with her family, friends, colleagues, and everyone missing her right now. We honor Grace by continuing to show up for our people, especially those who are too often left without support. Thank you for the lives you changed, Grace. We love you, and we will carry your work forward. Rest In Power.

There are some films that are more than something you sit down and watch. They hold pieces of our history, our language, our creativity, our resistance, and the ways q***r and trans people have always found family with one another. Paris Is Burning is one of those films.

For LGBTQ+ History Month, we’re bringing it to Movie & Mail Night on Thursday, October 8. We’ll watch the film together, spend time in community, and write letters to our people inside. Because remembering our history also means remembering the LGBTQIA+ people who are incarcerated right now and making sure they know community has not forgotten them.

You do not need any experience with Black & Pink’s mail program to participate. Come watch the film, meet some folks, learn about the work, and write alongside us. We’ll help you get started.

Those words are bigger than a campaign message. They are a reminder of what it means when someone has a place to turn, a place where they can eat, rest, get support, find their footing, and begin building toward what comes next.

Opportunity Campus is already making that possible. Five residents have been housed. Twelve young people have been supported into employment. More than 8,000 meals have been served, and 17 emergency hotel stays have helped people through moments when there was nowhere else to go.

But this work does not continue on good intentions alone.

We’re asking our community to help keep care within reach for our people in Omaha. At Black & Pink National’s Opportunity Campus, that means a place to live, a meal to count on, emergency shelter, and support finding employment.

This work has already helped house 5 residents, connect 12 young people with employment, provide 17 emergency hotel stays, and serve 8,000+ meals. We want to keep showing up, and doing that takes resources.

North Omaha showed up, and we are still smiling about it.

On September 4, our Opportunity Campus Cookout brought neighbors, families, friends, community partners, and our team together for food, games, music, resources, conversation, and time to simply be with one another.

The work of building community does not only happen in meetings, offices, or programs. Sometimes it looks like burgers on the grill, kids gathered around a table, resources being shared under a tent, people laughing together, and neighbors having the chance to connect.

Every photo in this carousel was taken at our Opportunity Campus Cookout. These are the real people, real conversations, and real moments that made the day what it was.

Thank you to everyone who pulled up, ate good, shared resources, helped make the day happen, and spent time in community with us. North Omaha, we appreciate you.

You should not have to check your account balance before telling someone you love them. But for people trying to reach someone in prison, even “I miss you” can come with a charge. Companies are making money off the moments that keep our people connected.

Our family inside deserves to hear the good news, talk about a hard day, and know someone will keep showing up. Black & Pink National’s pen pal program connects incarcerated LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV with people outside to build relationships that reach beyond prison walls.
