Preservation in action!

After attending another This Old Castle workshop with The Jo(h)ns, Phia Gustafson reached out to Preserve Omaha for help repairing some of her original windows. Phia’s 100+ year old windows were non-operable and ready for a new life. Our board members John, Jon, and Jeremy (The Triple J, as we call them) put together a window workshop at Phia’s house to show other homeowners how to repair their historic windows to keep them out of the landfill and working for another 100+ years. Workshop attendees got a full day of hands-on experience, learning how to remove sash, strip paint, glaze, hang weights, and reinstall. Preservation isn’t always easy, but it is always worth the effort!

Reasons we love old windows:

1. Character ✨ Original windows were custom made for your historic home and add charm that no replacement can.

2. Efficiency 📈 When properly maintained, original windows are just as efficient as replacements.

3. Sustainability ♻️ Old windows can be repaired over and over again, lasting hundreds of years. Replacements will only last 10-30 years, causing you to throw thousands of dollars worth of product into the landfill on repeat.

4. Quality 🔨 They literally don’t make them like they used to. Hello, old growth wood and wavy glass!

Have we convinced you yet? Come learn all of the skills necessary to maintain and repair your own windows next Saturday, May 30, 9:00-3:30, at the Preserve Omaha Window Workshop! Our workshop will be hosted at the historic 1920s brick beauty located at 1719 S. 16th Street. Attendees will get hands-on experience by taking apart and repairing four original double-hung windows. Participants will learn all the skills necessary for window restoration, including: window stop and sash removal and reinstallation, weatherstripping and sash cord replacement, sash repair, scraping, painting, and glass, points, and glazing compound installation.

Lunch is included with your ticket. Due to the hands-on nature of this workshop, space is extremely limited. Enroll today at the link in our bio!

Preservation isn’t one look. It’s all of it.

From crystal chandeliers to starburst light fixtures…from the late 1800s to the bold optimism of the 1950s and 60s…these places tell the story of who we were, how we lived, and what we valued.

That’s why, during National Preservation Month, we’re celebrating the full spectrum—honoring the homes and buildings that shaped Omaha, and taking a closer look at those just beginning to be recognized as historic.

Mid-Century Modern may feel familiar, even recent… but if it’s over 50 years old, it’s part of our history too. And many of these spaces are at risk of being changed or lost before we fully appreciate them.

We think they’re worth preserving.
And once you step inside, you might too.

Join us May 14, 5:00-7:00 for the Summer of Mid-Century Modern Kickoff: John F. Hyde Jr. Home Tour with a free open house in a stunning Mid-Century Modern home. We’re teaming up with to take you to this rare 1955 gem designed by John F. Hyde, Jr. in Wyman Heights at 9660 N. 29th St. You won’t want to miss the original architectural details or river views!

What we preserve is what we remember… and this is a house you won’t forget.
