Acceptance and inclusion = s*x trafficking prevention.

Acceptance and inclusion = s*x trafficking prevention.

When LGBTQ+ youth are rejected at home or school, traffickers see an opportunity to exploit the need to belong.

Affirming environments, chosen family, and safe spaces are more than supportive. They are protective.

Happening tomorrow, Omaha! Have you reached out to your city council rep yet??

On Tuesday, June 16, at 2:00 pm, the Omaha City Council will hold a public hearing on Councilmember Danny Begley’s proposal to ensure that Omaha residents are paid a fair wage by restoring the protections the state legislature removed this year.

📣 TAKE ACTION: Tell your Omaha City Council members to uphold the will of Omaha voters and restore the critical wage protections we voted for in 2022: bit.ly/fairpayoma

In 2022, almost 60% of Nebraska voters – and 7 out of 10 Omaha voters – approved the Raise the Wage Nebraska ballot measure to increase Nebraska’s minimum wage, and to ensure our wages continue to grow as the cost of living increases.

Unfortunately, during this past legislative session, state lawmakers rolled back these popular wage protections in two harmful ways: (1) they created a subminimum wage for youth workers, who often are working to provide vital income for their families, and (2) they restricted the annual wage adjustments, which all but ensured that Nebraska’s wages over time will once again fail to keep pace with rising costs.

This ordinance would restore the wage laws Omaha voters widely supported by ensuring youth workers are paid a fair wage and removing the harmful cap on annual cost of living increases for workers in Omaha.

“Media outlets point to elevated risks, advocacy groups roll out awareness campaigns, and city authorities and law enforcement ramp up anti-trafficking efforts. This is all well intentioned. But as experts in human trafficking and the commercial s*xual exploitation of children, we believe the talk of an increased risk might be misplaced.

Two decades of empirical research across events such as the Super Bowl, Olympic Games and prior World Cups show no consistent evidence that human trafficking increases because of large sporting events. Further, framing trafficking as episodic and event-based can be counterproductive.”

Public awareness campaigns around the World Cup and other sporting events are well intentioned – but not backed by research.

The Power of Us! ✨

Tuesday night’s event planned, produced and led by local youth leaders was *chef’s kiss* We heard from a few young people who have led school walkouts, hustled to gather mutual aid when their community was in need and advocated for the real change they not only wanted but needed. Zines were made, food was enjoyed and community was strengthened.

Many thanks to our partner orgs -- NEw Voices, Youth Elect, Strongly Worded Letters, Students for Sustainability and ACLU of Nebraska. Give them a follow and show them some love.

This event was in partnership with our Lead the Change Fund.

As Men's College World Series events begin in our community, we are reminded of past harm we caused in previous campaigns elevating the false narrative that addressing s*x trafficking is about “awareness” at large public events. S*x trafficking is a public health issue rooted in systemic failures that create vulnerability, exploitation and harm.

This isn’t happening in our communities because big events come to town; it’s happening every day where people lack stable housing, access to affordable healthcare, living wages, community support and legal protections. It disproportionately impacts foster youth, unhoused individuals, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ youth and others pushed to the margins.

Trafficking prevention is about more than responding after harm occurs. It’s about building systems where people’s basic needs, safety, dignity and autonomy are protected in the first place. If we want to prevent s*x trafficking in our communities, we must address the conditions that allow it to persist.
