If you love gardens and want to spend a beautiful summer evening exploring some of the best ones in Omaha, this one is for you.
PlantNebraska is hosting their annual Garden Walk in Omaha on Monday July 14th from 5 to 8 PM. You will meander through a self-guided tour of some truly inspiring gardens, with knowledgeable gardeners on hand at each stop to answer questions and share what they have learned. It is a wonderful evening for anyone who loves plants, landscaping, or simply being outside in a beautiful space.
Tickets are just $15 for the general public and $10 for PlantNebraska members. And here is the best part. Tickets are priced per car, not per person. Load up your friends and make an evening of it.
Your ticket purchase also supports PlantNebraska's important work in tree planting, garden making, and environmental education across the state. That is a good reason to go all by itself.
Register at plantnebraska.org and follow PlantNebraska on Facebook for updates and garden details.
Maybe Benson Community Garden will be one of the stops in 2027. We think we are ready for it!

Our cute little shed was designed and built perhaps a bit too small, but it [mostly] served its purpose over the years. 💚🪏🍅

Pen and ink. Native wildflowers. A garden full of people creating something beautiful together. 💚🎨🖌️🌾
Earlier this week we hosted Ink and Wildflowers, a botanical illustration workshop led by Omaha artist Julia McGuigan of Julia M Illustrates. Participants drew detailed pen and ink illustrations of pollinator plants right from our certified pollinator garden. Beginners welcome and that showed in the most wonderful way.
Jenny opened the evening with a brief introduction to our garden and our mission. Julia guided everyone through observation drawing and shading techniques from start to finish. Everyone left with a finished illustration and a packet of seeds.
Julia is a familiar face at Omaha farmers markets and a neighbor of this garden. We are so glad to call her a partner and friend.
More local art is coming to Benson Community Garden later this year. Stay tuned!

We were pleased to host "Ink & Wildflowers", an art workshop by Julia M Illustrates, last night here in the garden. It was wonderful to see the participants and the beautiful ink drawings they created.

Put down the Sharpie. If you are labeling plants, herb markers, or anything else that lives outside, Sharpie ink will not survive the sun and it absolutely will not survive a Nebraska summer. We learned that the easy way so you do not have to learn it the hard way.
White acrylic paint pens hold up through heat, rain, and everything in between. We use them throughout our common area at Benson Community Garden to keep all of our herbs and plants clearly identified all season long.

WARNING ⚠️‼️⛔️
Stick around until the end. There is a dad joke waiting for you and it is exactly as cringey as you are expecting it to be. 😂🤣😂
I crack myself up!

If native wildflowers or pollinator gardening is on your radar this season, we have a recommendation for you and it is a good one.
Bumbling Bee Native Wildflowers in the Walnut Hill neighborhood is exactly the kind of small business that makes Omaha better. owners Amanda and Dan are genuine experts in native plants, incredibly friendly, and truly passionate about what they grow. This is not a hobby for them. It is a calling.
They have been a wonderful resource for our own pollinator garden here at Benson Community Garden, and the selection of healthy, beautiful native plants they carry is impressive.
If you want to start a pollinator garden, add native wildflowers to your yard, or just talk to someone who really knows their stuff, go find Amanda and Dan. Follow their page and show them some love.
Support small. Support local. Support the pollinators.

Omaha has a growing community garden scene. And we are on a mission to visit every one of them. This morning stopped by the garden at Elmwood Tower to see his friend Tom Luke, who is getting back into gardening for the first time since he was a kid.
Tom has his own plot right outside one of the most recognizable buildings in the city, and the joy of watching someone return to something they loved is hard to put into words.
The space is serene, beautifully maintained, and the garden art alone is worth the visit.
But what really struck us is what this garden represents.
All across Omaha, community gardens are giving people a place to grow their own food, connect with neighbors, and build something meaningful together.
These gardens deserve to be known. Their stories deserve to be shared. And we hope that by sharing them, we inspire someone else to start one.
Know a community garden in Omaha? Tag it below or send us a message. We want to come visit and share your story.

We have a few young PawPaw Trees growing on the lot here at the Benson Community Garden. Have you ever tasted a pawpaw? They're the largest edible fruit native to North America. We think they taste like a combination of mango and banana, with a hint of vanilla. YUM!

Grow your own native pawpaw tree at home. Learn how to plant, care for, and harvest this unique fruit for a thriving backyard tree and delicious yields.
