Benson Community Garden

Benson Community Garden Founded in 2010, the Benson Community Garden provides space for individuals and families to grow fruits and vegetables for their personal consumption.

Community garden featuring 36 plots, a certifed pollinator garden and wildlife habitat, the Earth Stage for events, and peaceful seating for visitors to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the space. There are 36 plots available for rent (Eighteen are 4’ x 8’ for $35/year and eighteen 4’ x 12’ for $45/year). Gardeners have access to gardening hand tools and rainwater which is collected from the house

next door. In addition to the garden plots, the space features the “Earth Stage” for live performances and educational offerings. Benson Community Garden’s mission is “…to strengthen our community by providing an urban agricultural space where individuals and families can come together to grow farm-fresh foods, share tools and resources, and learn about gardening and nutrition.”

Visitors welcome to browse and relax in the space, but PLEASE NO PICKING of fruits, veggies, or flowers. Our gardeners spend a great amount of time, money, and resources tending their plots.

Holy cow what a year for blackberries! This year we have seen the largest berries ever in our 15 years as a community garden. 😳
We plan to save some of these seeds so we can start new plants to give away to neighbors.

We had a special visitor at the garden recently. KMTV 3 News Now Chief Meteorologist Tim Schmidt and his team stopped by to talk with us about how we use the weather forecast in our day-to-day decisions here at Benson Community Garden.
During a dry spell, we encourage our gardeners to come early in the morning and water before the heat of the day sets in. In early spring and fall, when frost is in the forecast, we send out the word so gardeners can come cover their plants with a sheet or blanket before temperatures drop. And any time we are planning an event here, keeping a close eye on the forecast is part of making sure it goes smoothly.
Watching the weather is not just a nice habit for a gardener. It is one of the most important tools you have.

Compost Conquered!!! 🪏🥦🥕🥒
Our gardeners are the absolute best! Gardener Desmond manages and maintains the biological health in our compost pile. He asked for some help to turn things and get them in order for autumn - and we had a wonderful crew show up this evening to make short work of it. The compost is looking beautiful and producing black gold!

A wheelbarrow with a sweet story behind it…
Recently one of our old wheelbarrows gave out, so we went looking on Facebook Marketplace for a replacement. We found one, messaged the seller, and casually mentioned it was for our community garden. The seller, part of the family of Marie Peters, offered to donate it to us instead of selling it, in memory of their grandmother Marie, who loved gardening.
We are grateful to the Peters family for this generous gift. It will get plenty of use here at Benson Community Garden for seasons to come.

Big week at the garden. KMTV 3 News chief meteorologist Tim Schmidt came out to the Benson Community Garden to shoot a segment on something every gardener knows in their bones: how much the weather forecast shapes what we plant, when we plant it, and how we plan the whole season.

We had a blast. We got to talk shop about gardening, sure, but also about the thing that matters most to us out here, building community one shared patch of dirt at a time. A real honor to have our local CBS affiliate stop by and take an interest in what we’re growing.

The timing feels just right, too. I started this garden back in 2011 on the empty lot next to my house, and this year we’re celebrating 15 years as an organization. Fifteen years in, and it keeps growing in every sense of the word.

The segment airs soon. Follow along so you don’t miss it, and we’ll share it the moment it drops.
