CASA for Douglas County

CASA for Douglas County CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, trains, empowers, and inspires volunteer advocates to improve the lives of abused and neglected children.

CASA was established in the Omaha area in 1998 at the urging of area judges. The idea of CASA first originated in the Seattle area, when a juvenile court judge felt that he was not sufficiently informed about a case involving a child. CASA was created under the premise that there must be an advocate for children within the court system--someone who will fight and keep the child's best interests at

heart. It is the CASA volunteer that helps judges make good decisions on behalf of these abused children. Between parents, foster parents, social workers, lawyers and Guardians ad LItem, a child within the court system is constantly being faced with change and instability. In Omaha, over 1,700 children, at any one time, are entangled in the foster care system because they are victims of abuse or neglect. Society has a fundamental obligation to ensure the basic rights and needs of every child are met. CASA volunteers are formidable forces that fight for these rights. There is no one else like a CASA volunteer who brings attention to a child’s need, both in and out of the courtroom. Court Appointed Special Advocate programs provide an innovative, cost-effective approach to a very urgent crisis. CASA programs recruit, screen, train, and supervise CASA volunteers to provide individualized attention for these innocent victims and an independent source of information for the judge who must decide their future. CASA is a national association that has local progams to support their individual communities. Each local program recruits, trains, and supports volunteers. "The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish permanence and have the opportunity to thrive." -National CASA Association, CASAforChildren.org

We were honored to have Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. join us for the 6th Annual CASA Classic Golf Tournament! With his background in law enforcement and experience serving as commander of the Special Victims Unit, Mayor Ewing understands firsthand the importance of ensuring children have an advocate by their side. During the CASA Classic, he shared, “CASA for Douglas County does great work for our young people, making sure they have representation and that they're able to navigate a very complex system that is difficult for even adults to get through.” We are deeply grateful to Mayor Ewing for recognizing the critical work of CASA for Douglas County—and for joining us to putt in the Split the Pot contest!

On Thursday, August 27th, we celebrated a special Swearing-In Ceremony with the Hon. Candice J. Novak, Judge of the Separate Juvenile Court. We are proud to welcome six new Volunteer Advocates to CASA for Douglas County: Tracy L. Agenbroad, Eldaah Asfaw, Elizabeth Hoffman, Sydney Johnson, Emilee Kendall, and Thomas Volberding. Judge Novak shared a powerful reminder of why this work matters, “There are so many kids who say their Volunteer Advocate is the best person they had in their life while in the foster care system. The youth know they have someone in their corner who is going to step in.” That’s exactly what being a CASA Volunteer Advocate is all about—showing up, speaking up, and standing in a child’s corner. Congratulations to our newest Volunteer Advocates and thank you to the family and friends in attendance, as well as CASA Board, leadership, and staff!

CASA for Douglas County's Executive Director Kimberly C. Sherrod Barnes was proud to participate in the Dana Village Foster Youth Summit, co-sponsored by Lutheran Family Services and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She joined a panel discussion focused on state resources that support youth as they transition out of the foster care system. We’re grateful for opportunities like this to connect, share resources, and advocate for young people as they take their next steps toward independence and a bright future.
